Bass Harbor Campground

Overview

Bass Harbor Campground offers a quintessential coastal Maine experience, tucked away on the southwestern tip of Mount Desert Island. Known for its wooded setting and proximity to the Atlantic, this park provides a tranquil alternative to the bustling tourist centers found elsewhere on the island. Visitors are greeted by a natural landscape that emphasizes peace and quiet, making it a premier choice for those looking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the region while maintaining easy access to modern conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in the charming fishing village of Bass Harbor, ME, which is often referred to as the quiet side of the island. A standout feature of the location is the woodland trail that leads directly from the campground toward the iconic Bass Harbor Head Light Station. Surrounded by dense evergreens and the salty breeze of the Maine coast, the campground serves as a gateway to the less crowded portions of Acadia National Park, including the scenic Seawall and Ship Harbor areas.

  • A camp store providing firewood, ice, and camping essentials.
Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, encouraging traditional evening campfires. The park layout is carefully designed to preserve the natural canopy and provide a sense of privacy for every guest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

We stayed in our camper. The site had full hook ups and was large enough for our large 5th wheel. Our site had shade trees, fire ring and was quite. The employees were all very pleasant. The location is about a mile from Acadia hiking and a half mile from Bass Harbor Light house.

Great place to enjoy Acadia NP. Easy to find, close to light house and restaurants. Hosts are very friendly and the price was really good compared to every other campground. Clean bathrooms and showers. A lot of other amenities for the family, but we were there to just see the park. Highly recommend.

This was such a sweet little cozy campground! We spent half of our stay on Mt. Desert Island at this campground. The facilities were all really clean, the campground employees were SO kind and helpful (shout out to Sarah at the front desk who suggested a couple of the best activities we did during our visit, and Mike who helped us trouble shoot our RV!), and it was so conveniently located to explore the southern end of the island. The only thing to note which didn't bother us too much is the sites are on the smaller side and very close together, so it isn't super private. Overall, we loved our stay and we hope to come back and check out either the yurts or tent sites next time!

Overall, this was a very quiet and clean campground. Everyone was super nice and polite (staff and campers). Bathrooms were clean for the most part. The only real issue i had was my site (and most sites around us) was on the small size and had several stumps that made it annoying for our large tent (family of 6). Outside of that, due to its location and all other factors, its a fantastic little gem to get away from the crowds closer to bar harbor.

A great campground right near a lighthouse and Acadia National Park. They have bathrooms, showers, camp store, and even a dishwashing station outside their bathrooms. I got a site in the back, with electric, and it was perfect for my week-long stay. They also have a pool, a rec room and a little playground, perfect for the kiddos. Loved being able to walk to the lighthouse and having an easy drive to Acadia! The staff were also so nice and pleasant, this will definitely be on my list for campgrounds I'd stay at again.
