Berlin-Ichthyosaur
Overview
Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park offers a unique blend of prehistoric wonders and Nevada’s mining history. Located in the Shoshone Mountains, this park serves as a preserved window into the 1890s mining boom and the Triassic period. Visitors can explore the well-preserved Berlin ghost town while visiting the site of the world’s largest concentration of Shonisaurus popularis fossils. It is a quiet, contemplative destination for travelers who appreciate history and solitude. This state park provides an educational experience that bridges millions of years, from ancient marine reptiles to pioneer mining life.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly 23 miles east of Gabbs, the park sits at an elevation of 7,000 feet. The landscape is characterized by high-desert vegetation and rugged mountain slopes, providing panoramic views of the Ione Valley. Because of its remote location, the area experiences very little light pollution, making it a premier spot for stargazing. Travelers should prepare for winding mountain roads and significant temperature shifts between day and night when planning their arrival.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic destination focused on the natural environment rather than modern luxuries. The park features 14 primitive campsites, most of which can accommodate RVs up to 25 feet in length. Facilities are basic, including vault toilets and a seasonal dump station. While fire rings and picnic tables are provided at each site, there are no electrical or water hookups. Drinking water is typically available during warmer months, but the supply is limited, so travelers are encouraged to arrive with full fresh water tanks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The main draw is the Fossil House, which protects ancient Ichthyosaur remains still embedded in the rock. Guided tours are often available during the peak season. Walking through the Berlin ghost town allows visitors to see original wooden structures and mining equipment. For those interested in underground history, the Diana Mine tour offers a glimpse into the life of a hard-rock miner. Hiking trails also wind through the surrounding pinon-juniper forests, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for history enthusiasts and fossil lovers who prefer a quiet, off-the-grid experience. It is best suited for owners of smaller RVs, camper vans, or truck campers due to size limitations on the sites. If you are looking to escape the crowds and enjoy rugged Nevada scenery with an educational twist, this remote state park is a perfect addition to your itinerary. It is not recommended for travelers requiring full hookups or resort-style amenities.

we got there late and thought we were going to miss the morning tour but the person working the camp opened another tour for us and a couple of other groups that had shown up. we got to see the ichthyosaur fossils and ask questions. there is even more to see of the ghost town for the Berlin mine. Will definitely be returning again in the future.

Lots of interesting artifacts in the Ghost town. You can see the dinosaur bones even if the building is closed. The campground is surprisingly busy.

What a treat. We made it there is time for one of the 2 shlwo gs a day to see the fossils. They were amazing and well worth the detour. We have a small class C RV that we went out to the park with. It's pretty rough road for that. But most vehicles should make it. The Berlin ghost town is so well preserved. It is open for exploration and will be as long as visitors continue to respect the area.

With a 2 hour drive from Reno, it's something in the middle of nowhere. The fossils are difficult to see. The displays are ok. The ghost town is way more interesting. Be prepared to get some rain!

A. Rugged scenic wonderland! Brought my family and some friends joined us. Our kids had one of the best times camping ever! We hit it during spring, which is one of the ideal times. I'd consider going back in the fall as well. No showers, vaulted toilets but nice campgrounds. We stayed at the group campsite which was spectacular.
