Big South Fork/Blue Heron Campground
Overview
Situated within the Kentucky portion of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, Blue Heron Campground offers a deep immersion into the region’s natural beauty and industrial history. Managed by the National Park Service, this destination serves as a gateway to the rugged landscapes of the Cumberland Plateau, offering a serene environment for those seeking solitude. It provides a peaceful retreat for travelers who appreciate scenic overlooks and well-preserved history without the crowds often found in more commercialized resort parks.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is perched on a high ridge overlooking the Big South Fork River in Stearns, Kentucky. The area is defined by massive sandstone bluffs, deep gorges, and dense hardwood forests that transform with vibrant colors in the fall. The elevation provides cooler temperatures during the summer months, making it a refreshing woodland escape. Because it is located near the historic Blue Heron Mining Community, the surroundings feel like a living museum, where the sounds of the forest meet the legacy of the Appalachian coal industry.
Amenities & Park Features
This facility features 45 campsites, each equipped with water and electric hookups to accommodate various RV sizes. The park provides essential features for a comfortable stay including:
- Paved parking pads and picnic tables
- Fire rings for evening gatherings
- A modern bathhouse with hot showers and restrooms
- A central dump station and fresh water fill
Many sites are shaded by a mature forest canopy, providing privacy and a natural feel. While the park maintains a rustic vibe, the well-maintained infrastructure ensures a hassle-free experience for modern RVers who want a balance of utility and nature.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Blue Heron Mining Community, an outdoor museum accessible via a short drive. Adventure seekers can explore the Blue Heron Loop Trail, which offers breathtaking views of the river gorge and unique rock formations like the Devils Jump. Additionally, the Big South Fork Scenic Railway makes a rhythmic journey through the mountains, allowing visitors to experience a historic train ride. The river itself is popular for kayaking and canoeing, offering some of the most remote paddling in the state.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and history buffs who prefer a quiet, authentic outdoor experience over a commercial atmosphere. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to combine education with recreation. Because of its secluded location and access to extensive hiking trails, it serves as a perfect home base for those wanting to disconnect, enjoy the dark night stars, and explore the wild side of the Kentucky mountains.

The campground is small but very nice and well kept. Some of the sites aren't very long. The bathroom/shower house was clean. The window in the family shower is surprisingly clear and visible from the upper loop. We had to block the window with a tote lid. Each site has a food storage box. We did see a bear along the campground road. We would stay here again.

The campground is just inside Big South Fork NRR with multiple easily accessible trails. Be aware that most of the sites are around 30 feet long, but they're plenty wide enough for all your gear/equipment. There is a bathhouse that's clean and decently maintained. We had site 8 which backed up to a small pond. It's a beautiful, no frills, but very clean campground.

Campground was great for RV and large travel trailers. There are stes with 30 and 50 amp service and sites for up to about 50 feet. The 50 amp service are sites 30 through 40. There no sewer hookups, just a dump station. The camp is remote about 15 minutes from Stearns which has grocery store, auto parts and convenience stores. There is no firewood for sale, so bring it with or scavenge for wood. There are bears in and around the campground. The place is very beautiful ND peaceful.

Great campground, well laid out and clean. Bathrooms were well maintained and the campsites were clean and well set up. My only negative(for us) was no trails leading directly from the campground. Or at least none we found. Will definitely go back. Great for camping with kiddos!

Overall it is a nice campground with a pretty good price since it has free showers and hookups at every site. Tent pad was very roomy. There was not a camp host when we were there, which wasn't great. The frogs are very loud, so bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper in a tent. There is a lot of poison ivy in the woods around the sites, but it is cleared back some.
