Birch Lake - COE/Birch Cove

Overview

Birch Lake is a hidden gem managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, offering a serene escape in the rolling hills of northeastern Oklahoma. Located near Barnsdall, the Birch Cove area provides a rustic yet comfortable setting for RVers who value nature over commercial frills. It is a destination defined by its scenic lake views and dense hardwood forests, creating a tranquil environment for a weekend getaway or an extended stay under the big Oklahoma sky.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of Osage County, the park is surrounded by a lush landscape of oak and hickory trees. The topography is characterized by rocky bluffs and gentle hills that frame the 1,137-acre lake. While it feels remote and secluded, Birch Cove is conveniently located just a short drive from the small-town charm of Barnsdall, providing easy access to essential supplies while maintaining a sense of quiet isolation that is hard to find in more developed areas.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features well-spaced sites with various setups to accommodate different rig sizes. Travelers will find functional facilities designed to make a stay in the woods seamless and enjoyable. Key park features include:

  • Electric hookups (30 and 50 amp) and several sites with water access.
  • A convenient on-site dump station and clean shower facilities.
  • Access to a dedicated swimming beach, playground, and multi-lane boat launch.

These amenities ensure a comfortable stay while preserving the natural integrity of the lakeshore.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore nearby. The lake is renowned for its crappie and bass fishing, while the surrounding woods are perfect for birdwatching and wildlife photography. A short drive takes you to the famous Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve, where you can see bison and elk roaming the grounds. Additionally, the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is within easy reach, offering a glimpse of one of the last remaining large-scale prairie ecosystems in the country.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat without the crowds of larger state parks. It is perfect for families who enjoy water-based activities and budget-conscious RVers looking for a high-quality camping experience at COE rates. If you prefer nature-centric camping where the sound of the wind through the trees and the lap of water against the shore are your primary soundtrack, Birch Cove is an excellent choice for your next Oklahoma adventure.

Great camp grounds, boys had a good time. Swam, fished (didn't catch anything) but had fun.

Had a great time with the bros, jumped in the water and had a great time. But it started raining so hard our tents almost washed away and mind you this was at 3am. But made great memories will be going back soon

We have been coming to Birch Cove since 2019 or 2020. It is the absolute best and that includes bathrooms, swim area, camp site, EVERYTHING! VERY NICE AND CLEAN. It's quiet and everyone is always so friendly! You are not hounded by park managers or park officers. Our favorite campsites are 9, 12, and 11. All of them are nice, though! Thank you to all the staff that help keep this precious land beautiful and sacred!

Big campground and I only saw 1 other camper. Very pretty and quiet. Bathroom/shower room was clean. Good cell signal. I was in the 40-64 loop close to the bathroom and I only saw cleaning crew and 1 other camper on my 1 night there. Would stay there again if I come thru that way again.

The host campsite was abandoned. The only other campers was definitely abandoned. Started to pick up cigarette butts and trash but it was all over. Got the finger from a local going into the park. Scary and filthy.
