Black River/Castle Mound
Overview
Castle Mound serves as a scenic gateway to the expansive Black River State Forest. Located just outside the city of Black River Falls, this campground is characterized by its dramatic sandstone butte and lush pine forests. It offers a balance between traditional camping and accessibility, making it one of the most popular stops for travelers in Western Wisconsin. Whether you are seeking a quiet night under the stars or a base for outdoor adventure, the park provides a tranquil natural setting with deep roots in the region's conservation history.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated conveniently near Highway 12, offering easy access for RVers while maintaining a sense of seclusion. The landscape is dominated by the iconic Castle Mound butte, which provides stunning views of the surrounding driftless-like terrain. Towering white pines and oaks create a dense canopy that provides excellent privacy between sites. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a rugged forest environment that feels miles away from civilization, despite being only a short drive from the local conveniences of Black River Falls.
Amenities & Park Features
Castle Mound offers a mix of electric and non-electric sites, catering to different RV styles. While the vibe is rustic, the park provides essential comforts such as electric hookups at select sites, seasonal flush toilets, and showers. Each site features a fire ring and a heavy-duty picnic table for outdoor dining. For those with larger rigs, there are several pull-through sites designed to accommodate more significant lengths. The facility also includes a playground for families and well-maintained vault toilets available throughout the year.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities. The signature Castle Mound Trail offers a rewarding hike to an observation tower with panoramic views. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the crystal-clear waters of Wazee Lake Recreation Area, known as the deepest lake in Wisconsin and a hotspot for scuba diving. The surrounding state forest also boasts over 100 miles of multi-use trails, making it a premier destination for ATV and UTV riding during the warmer months and snowmobiling in the winter.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for RVers who prefer a natural forest experience over a highly developed resort. It is perfect for hikers, photographers, and those who travel with off-road vehicles. Families looking for a classic camping atmosphere will appreciate the wooded privacy and easy trail access. While big rigs can find spots, it is best suited for those who enjoy rustic charm and outdoor recreation, providing a quiet retreat for travelers passing through the Interstate 94 corridor.

I recently had my CELL CAM stolen from the woods in Black River Falls. To my surprise when I tracked my cell cam GPS, it showed up here at Castle Mound Campground, in the garage building. I have last photos of this person who stole my cell cam and GPS. I've never camped here, but this person's action is enough to persuade me why I shouldn't camp here. What kind of people are the WI DNR Parks hiring?. The last photo was from another cell cam showing his car, which was also stolen the same day.

Beautiful campground if you stay inside all the time. Mosquitos are brutal and centronella dont help or repellant either they enjoy it i believe. And it's all day and calms a little at night only. Had to leave early due to the thousands of these pesky bugs.

Two separate men helped me book this camping spot via phone. Both gentlemen! The Mosquitos were raising hell but that's life. Sorry bucko. Beautiful morning walk. Got lost on my way in because I felt I had better judgement than the GPS. Had Beer Barrel Polka blasting on the box. Anyhow, found my way in. You can get a site via smart phone but I did it old school. Thanks Wisconsin you sure was kind to me.
