Boise/Power Plant

Overview

Power Plant Campground offers a truly secluded escape within the Boise National Forest, located at the end of the road near the historic mining town of Atlanta, Idaho. Situated along the Middle Fork of the Boise River, this Forest Service site provides a rugged and authentic mountain experience for those willing to venture off the beaten path. It serves as a gateway to some of the most pristine wilderness in the state, making it a favorite for travelers who want to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in nature.

Location & Surroundings

The journey to the park is an adventure itself, requiring travel over long stretches of unpaved mountain roads that wind through the river canyon. Once you arrive, you are surrounded by towering pines and the dramatic, craggy peaks of the Sawtooth Range. The high-elevation setting ensures cool summer nights and a landscape filled with granite outcroppings and crystal-clear mountain streams. It is widely considered one of the most remote and scenic camping destinations in the central Idaho region.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive camping area, so visitors should come prepared for dry camping without electricity, water, or sewer hookups. The park features basic essentials including vault toilets and a seasonal hand-pump for potable water. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a reinforced fire ring for evening campfires. While the sites are generally spacious and well-shaded, larger rigs should exercise caution due to the tight turns and the narrow nature of the forest access roads.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for blue-ribbon trout fishing in the adjacent Middle Fork. For hikers and backpackers, the nearby trailheads leading into the Sawtooth Wilderness offer breathtaking views and access to high alpine lakes. A short trip into the historic town of Atlanta allows visitors to explore Idaho’s rich mining heritage and unique architecture, while several undeveloped natural hot springs are located within a short drive or moderate hike from the campground boundaries.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers and adventure seekers who prioritize solitude and scenery over luxury resort amenities. If you enjoy boondocking and possess a vehicle capable of handling washboard roads, you will appreciate the quiet atmosphere and lack of crowds. It is a perfect fit for wildlife photographers, stargazers, and backcountry explorers looking for a quiet mountain basecamp that feels miles away from civilization.

The crew working on our street today had blocked the trash cans and when the truck came, stopped working to get the cans out and dumped. My wife and I very much appreciate the extra effort from the crew. Thank you!

I have never experienced such a frustrating and inconsiderate service from a power company in my life. Idaho Power shut off my electricity without a single letter, phone call, email, or prior notice for over a month. The only notice I ever received was a paper taped to my door — and that was after the power had already been turned off. I came home after a 12-hour shift (6 AM to 6 PM), exhausted and starving, only to walk into a dark home with no power and no explanation. My fridge had been off long enough that my food was almost warm, and I couldn’t even cook a simple meal. I hadn’t eaten in over 7 hours and just wanted a hot plate of food. Instead, I was left in the dark — literally. I called Idaho Power immediately and over the next 3 hours, I called them 4 to 5 times, each time explaining my situation clearly: I was home, I was hungry, my food was spoiling, and I needed the power restored urgently. Every time I called, I was told, “someone will be there soon.” But no one could give me a straight answer. Eventually, a representative told me they had only one technician serving Garden City, Boise, and Meridian — a shockingly inadequate response for a major utility provider. Then, to make matters worse, they started guilt-tripping me, saying that “other people also need their power turned on.” I understand that others need help too — that’s obvious — but to be guilted by a utility company after doing nothing wrong and waiting hours in a dark, powerless home is completely unprofessional and a very poor excuse. If there’s only one technician for three major cities, that’s a staffing and planning issue on their end, not mine. What makes it even more frustrating is how quickly they are to shut off someone’s power — but restoring it? That takes hours and no real urgency. This company has shown a complete lack of professionalism, empathy, and basic human decency. I genuinely believe Idaho Power is one of the most careless and inconsiderate companies I’ve ever had to deal with. They don’t just fail at customer service — they make their customers feel like a burden for needing the most basic service they’re paying for: electricity.

These people have screwed my bill up so bad that I almost have a nervous breakdown just thinking about it. Every time I call them for help it just gets worse, My bill isn’t due until September 11th. Right now it’s showing it’s past due and asking me to enter a payment arrangement. I just paid my bill 2 days ago. I don’t need this headache from Idaho Power. I’m currently in the middle of a chemotherapy regimen and the brain fog is horrendous. This added stress from Idaho Power is just adding to the misery. I truly hope the Idaho Public Utilities Commission reads these reviews. It’s inexcusable how Idaho Power treats customers.

Idaho power doesnt deserve any stars. Absolutely unprofessional utility company with even more unprofessional customer service to let people know about billing. I had moved and canceled service and was told I would have a small payment to pay in a few weeks. They then added the whole previous month, which no one had mentioned about, so it came out over 100$ more than told. Talk about a complete bullshit company

This company is so disappointing! My address was used by someone else and nobody notified me of the errors when it occured and corrected. The representative was asking why I didn’t check the monthly bill to notify this error? And no prevention action at all! They never notified me anything and just threw a large amount of bill and push me to pay!
