Brantley Lake

Overview

Brantley Lake State Park serves as a refreshing oasis nestled within the Chihuahuan Desert of southeastern New Mexico. As the southernmost lake in the state, this destination provides a unique contrast between the arid landscape and the sprawling waters of the Pecos River. The reservoir itself was created by Brantley Dam, providing a vital habitat for local wildlife and a recreational hub for the community. Travelers visiting this park find a serene environment that prioritizes natural beauty and open spaces, making it a staple stop for those exploring the wonders of the Carlsbad region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated roughly 12 miles north of the city of Carlsbad, the park is easily accessible via Highway 285. The surrounding terrain is characterized by desert shrubland and rocky outcrops, offering expansive views of the New Mexico sky. Because it is located away from the main highway and city lights, the park provides an exceptionally quiet atmosphere and stunning stargazing opportunities for RVers looking to escape the bustle of urban life. The elevation is approximately 3,300 feet, which often leads to pleasant, cool breezes off the water during the evenings.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern travelers, offering developed camping at the Limestone Campground. Many sites feature water and electric hookups with both 30 and 50-amp service to accommodate various rig sizes. Visitors have access to clean restrooms with running water and hot showers, a central dump station, and a playground for families. Picnic tables and fire rings are available at each site, encouraging traditional outdoor cooking. The developed sites are generally spacious, providing enough room for slide-outs and outdoor gear while maintaining a sense of privacy.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the primary draw here, with opportunities for boating and fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. Birdwatchers will appreciate the park's location on a migratory path, making it a prime spot for spotting rare species near the shoreline. Beyond the park boundaries, guests are just a short drive from Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park, allowing for easy day trips to some of New Mexico's most famous and diverse landmarks.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and birders who prefer a rustic, scenic environment over a cramped commercial RV resort. It is a fantastic choice for families and couples who want a peaceful home base while exploring the nearby caverns. If you value wide-open spaces and a quiet night under the stars without sacrificing essential utilities, Brantley Lake offers the perfect balance of developed amenities and rugged Southwestern charm for your next road trip.

Nice lake with easy water acess for kayaks...dissapointed due high boat and jet skiers passing close at high speeds causing big wakes, had to use my safety flag at one. Good bass fishing.

Quiet, spacious campsites. Camp host is nice and helpful. Bathrooms are super clean Sure beats staying in an in town "parking lot" type of campground. Cell service is very good, too!

We stayed here for 4 nights. Two of the nights we were in site 6 with our 42ft 5th wheel and truck. The site was plenty long enough for the truck and trailer. The only issue is it’s a 30 amp site. We then moved to site 16 for the last two nights and it was also plenty long enough with 50 amp. A few of the first sites like 1-4 have full hookups the rest either are partial or none. The showers were pretty clean but the water is hot hot hot! They even have a caution sign on the door warning about it. There is a play ground for the kids and walking trails through the park. The water is super far away and not quick or easy to get to. It’s about a 10 to 15 minute walk. Be sure to take a spender web stick or you’ll be covered in webs and some decent sized spiders. The dump station is still closed. It is disappointing seeing how far back people have commented about it being under construction. It still is and there was never anyone there working on it. There are goat heads all over and some fun desert creatures for the kids to see. The first pictures are of site 6 the second set are of site 16.

The place appears to be closed, perfect for me. Not a soul in site. Found it on accident on my way to Carlsbad caverns. Hard to find free lakefront camping with privacy...

Was really looking forward to getting in the lake, but we were traveling in an RV and no real lake access via foot. The dump station was under renovation, which would have been helpful to know ahead of time. The bathrooms were clean, park was quiet, beautiful sunrises and sunsets....a good place for a zero day on our RV trip.
