Buck Lake

Overview

Calhoun's Bay Provincial Recreation Area at Buck Lake offers a serene escape for RVers seeking the classic Alberta lakeside experience. Situated along the western shore, this park provides a mix of treed campsites and open spaces that cater to those looking to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors. The atmosphere is laid-back and centered entirely around the water, making it a popular destination for seasonal travelers and weekend explorers alike who appreciate a quiet natural environment over a busy resort setting.

Location & Surroundings

Located in central Alberta near the small community of Buck Creek, the park is nestled within a lush boreal forest landscape. The area is defined by rolling hills and dense stands of poplar and spruce trees, providing a sense of seclusion and privacy between most sites. It is positioned far enough from major highways to offer quiet nights and clear views of the stars, yet remains accessible for those traveling from Edmonton or Red Deer who want a quick nature getaway without a long drive.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several power-hookup sites designed to accommodate various RV sizes and configurations. While the setting is rustic and focused on nature, visitors have access to essential facilities including a well-maintained triple-lane boat launch and a dedicated fish cleaning station for the day's catch. Each site typically includes a private fire pit and a sturdy picnic table, encouraging traditional campfire evenings. Pit toilets and water pumps are conveniently distributed throughout the grounds to ensure basic needs are met during your stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is Buck Lake itself, which is renowned throughout the province for its exceptional walleye fishing, northern pike, and yellow perch. Boaters and kayakers will find plenty of space to explore the expansive shoreline or enjoy high-energy water sports during the warm summer months. For those who prefer to stay on land, the surrounding wilderness offers opportunities for wildlife photography and spotting local species, including deer and various migratory waterfowl that frequent the lake's protected marshes and quiet bays.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for avid anglers and families who enjoy self-contained RVing in a rugged, natural setting. It appeals most to travelers who prioritize outdoor activities and water access over luxury resort amenities or paved playgrounds. If you are looking for a quiet place to launch a boat, spend the day on the water, and return to a peaceful forest campsite to watch the sunset, Buck Lake is a perfect fit for your travel style.

I am not impressed as the water is yucky. I saw a few boats and a few people camping. The water is definitely not for swimming. Also, it is empty. However, the grass is really nice.

Such a nice area. Easy access to off load your boat or paddleboard. Big Lake, room for all. Nice camping spots as well.

A small, open campground with a few sheltered spots. Kind of off the beaten path, this area has a boat launch and will appeal most to those who can utilize it.

Campsites are much closer together then the map shows. Site 9 and 11 are basically attached, glad it's occupied by such a nice family. The hand launch for canoes and kayaks is not paved or maintained and is basically a mossy mud pit, impassable without serious rubber boots. There is no real water access so if you are planning to spend time on/in the water, this is probably not the campsite for you.
