Camden Hills

Overview

Camden Hills State Park offers a quintessential Maine experience where the mountains meet the sea. Spanning over 5,700 acres, this destination is famous for its panoramic views of Penobscot Bay and its signature rugged landscape. Unlike typical commercial parks, it provides a natural forest setting that emphasizes the quiet beauty of the Midcoast region. It serves as an ideal basecamp for travelers looking to balance outdoor adventure with the sophisticated coastal charm of one of New England’s most famous harbor towns.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just two miles north of the picturesque village of Camden, the park is easily accessible via the iconic U.S. Route 1. The surrounding landscape is defined by rolling hills and dense woodlands that lead directly toward the rocky Atlantic coastline. Travelers can enjoy the unique sensation of being tucked away in a deep forest while remaining only minutes away from a bustling harbor filled with historic windjammers, boutique shops, and locally-sourced seafood restaurants.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides a variety of camping options, including dedicated sites for RV travelers. Many of these sites offer electric and water hookups with 30-amp or 50-amp service to accommodate modern rigs. On-site facilities are well-maintained and include modern bathhouses with hot showers and a centrally located RV dump station for convenience. While the park maintains a rustic vibe, it does provide wireless internet access at the campground to help travelers stay connected during their stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The crowning jewel of the park is the summit of Mount Battie, which can be reached via a winding auto road or a variety of hiking trails. From the stone tower at the top, visitors are treated to a world-class view of the islands dotting Penobscot Bay. Beyond the park borders, the Camden Harbor offers schooner tours and sea kayaking opportunities. For those who enjoy inland water, the nearby Megunticook Lake is a popular spot for swimming and freshwater fishing.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers who prioritize natural scenery over resort-style amenities like swimming pools or clubhouses. It is an excellent choice for RVers who prefer a quiet, wooded atmosphere and want to be immersed in Maine's wilderness. Families and couples looking for a serene retreat with easy access to both mountain trails and coastal culture will find this park perfectly fits their travel style.

This was our basecamp for visiting Camden. We love the town and the park. Clean, safe, friendly. If you're camping, there's no additional fee to drive up Mt. Battie. We discovered that Edna St. Vincent Milay wrote a poem about the view!

Cool state park in a great location. We camped one night in the off season. Park staff were friendly and helpful. We drove up to enjoy the view which is pretty spectacular, had dinner in Camden, then returned to the site for a warm campfire on a cool night. There are trails for hiking, decent cycling options, we saw a ton of wild turkeys. Only downside is that the bathroom/showers aren't quite at the level we're used to with the PA State Parks that we frequent. The campsites are spaced nicely so some are not right on top of each other, some are, but we had a lot of options this late in the season.

Camden Hills State Park is an absolute gem! The park offers stunning viewpoints overlooking Camden Harbor, Penobscot Bay, and the surrounding forests — the kind of scenery that makes every step worth it. Whether you hike up or drive to the top, the views are gorgeous throughout. Highly recommend visiting, especially on a clear day when you can see the islands spread out across the bay. 🌲⛰️✨

The view from the top of Mount Battie is absolutely gorgeous. In the fall it must be amazing!! We’ve been there several times through the years. They’ve made some improvements including a lead up sidewalk from the parking area which is wheelchair accessible. It cost $12 and change to enter the parking area which for 2 out of state residents in a vehicle.

We camped here for a few nights and enjoyed the campground. When checking in the woman at check in was helpful and very nice. Site was great, park was quiet at night, and the other campers were friendly. Would camp here again. Oh- and Mt Battie view is AMAZING.
