Camp High Sierra
Overview
Camp High Sierra offers a nostalgic retreat in the heart of the Eastern Sierra. Established in 1921, this historic destination provides a rustic mountain atmosphere that stands in pleasant contrast to modern luxury resorts. It serves as a legendary basecamp for those looking to experience the rugged beauty of Mammoth Lakes while staying in a deeply forested canyon setting. The park focuses on traditional outdoor experiences, blending historic charm with essential modern comforts to create a welcoming environment for all adventurous travelers.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the Old Mammoth area along Canyon Boulevard, the park is nestled among towering pines and ancient boulders. Despite its secluded and peaceful feel, it is conveniently located within walking distance of the town's amenities. Guests are just a short distance from the Free Town Trolley stop, providing easy access to local dining, breweries, and shopping. The high elevation ensures cool summer temperatures and immediate access to the pristine high-altitude landscapes that define the California High Sierra region.
Amenities & Park Features
This park is tailored for those who enjoy a back-to-basics lifestyle without sacrificing cleanliness. While the RV sites are dry camping only, guests have access to a central lodge and a historic recreation hall known as the Day Lodge. The famous hot showers and clean restroom facilities are a major draw for campers after a long day on the trails. Other features include a communal fire pit for evening gatherings, picnic tables at every site, and essential facilities like laundry and bear-proof food storage lockers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Endless adventure is just steps away from the campsite. Visitors can explore the Mammoth Lakes Basin for world-class fishing and boating or take a short trip to see the unique basalt columns at Devils Postpile National Monument. The area is a haven for mountain bikers and hikers, with trails leading directly to the stunning Rainbow Falls. During the summer months, the nearby Village at Mammoth offers seasonal festivals, while the mountain itself provides scenic gondola rides and lift-accessed hiking trails.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for smaller RVs and campervans under 32 feet seeking an authentic, unplugged getaway. Because there are no hookups, it attracts self-contained travelers who appreciate a quiet, communal environment over high-tech resort amenities. It is a perfect choice for outdoor enthusiasts and families who want to trade screen time for campfire stories and gain direct access to some of the most iconic wilderness areas in the California mountains.

Great staff rustic campground that makes you feel remote but just a short trip to everything

Hub and I spent 4 nights here, last week. We were happy to get a great spot without a reservation for all the nights needed. The young man at the office couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. You can purchase firewood at the office. The restrooms and shower house were always exceptionally clean. The showers are included with your stay so no quarters! It was peaceful and nice, no one bothering you. Quiet time is at 10 and everyone adhered to that. It is right next to town, which was convenient and only a couple miles to the lakes and activities. Very clean campground and pleasant experience, not to mention beautiful surroundings.

Avoid this place! They do construction on holiday weekends when guests are still sleeping. They were wearing gas masks spraying paint and chemicals on the buildings while we were unprotected. The wind was strong and blew the paint and chemicals right at us. I have bad allergies and it caused me to have an asthma attack. Totally uncalled for. They have no respect for guests and didn’t stop. You wouldn’t go in someone’s hotel room protected with a gas mask and start spraying the walls with paint while they were sleeping and leave them unprotected would you? We went to the woods to get away from chemicals and get fresh air and Mammouth delivered the biggest nightmare. Avoid! They don’t care about guests.

We stayed 3 nights here with a few other couples, kiddos & pets. There are several clean bathrooms throughout the property & also free, hot showers. Close distance to town. It is a bit challenging to make a reservation since you have to call the mammoth hotline. It was quiet & all other campers were respectful. A lot of kids & a lot of pets. Great first time here!
