Caribou-Targhee/Buffalo

Overview

Buffalo Campground in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest offers a serene escape into the high-country woods of eastern Idaho. This destination is defined by its lush forest canopy and its proximity to the gentle Buffalo River, which flows directly alongside the camping loops. It provides a peaceful alternative to the more crowded commercial parks found closer to the national park gates. Here, the focus is on a quiet, nature-forward experience where the sound of the wind in the lodgepole pines sets the daily pace for your stay.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at an elevation of approximately 6,300 feet, the park sits in the heart of Island Park, ID. The terrain is relatively flat but heavily timbered, offering generous shade and a sense of privacy between sites. The surrounding Caribou-Targhee National Forest serves as a massive backyard for exploration, featuring volcanic landscapes and vast meadows. Its position near the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River makes it a prime basecamp for those who want to explore the unique caldera geography of the region.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park leans toward a traditional forest experience, it offers several electric hookup sites that cater well to modern RVers. The interior roads and spurs are paved, which helps keep dust down and provides a level surface for stabilizers. Guests have access to pressurized drinking water and vault toilets, though there are no on-site showers. A major highlight is the river access, featuring a boat ramp suitable for launching canoes or rafts to enjoy a lazy float down the river right from the campground.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park’s location is ideal for visiting Big Springs, one of the largest springs in the country and the source of the North Fork. Anglers will appreciate the proximity to world-class fly fishing on the Henry’s Fork. Just a short drive away, travelers can witness the thunderous Upper and Lower Mesa Falls. For those heading to Yellowstone National Park, the West Entrance is roughly 30 miles north, making it easy to enjoy the geysers by day and return to a quiet forest setting by night.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is a perfect match for nature enthusiasts and families who prefer the sights and sounds of the forest over the amenities of a resort. It is ideal for trout anglers and paddlers who want immediate water access. Because it offers some electrical sites, it is a great choice for RVers who want a rustic feel without completely sacrificing power. If you are looking for a basecamp to explore the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem away from the tourist bustle, this is the spot.

We try and get to this campground at least once annually. Sometimes we're lucky and we get in twice. It's location next to the river is awesome. The river is excellent for rafting and tubing. There's also great fishing. Campground is well maintained and well monitored.

Nice campground. Had site 9. Level side to side. Paved pull through with gravel patio area. Would definitely stay again if in the area.

This is a great campground. With pull through sites. Water is available throughout the campground from a water Spicket. Very clean men's and women's restroom 🚻 vaults, with hand sanitizer dispensers. Plus, this Campground has paved blacktop roads and camp sites.

Misquoted to death so far. But soooo beautiful. It's worth the trip outside of Yellowstone. Electricity, so AC is running. So I can't believe how fortunate we have been with camping. #boondocking
