Situated near Peñasco, New Mexico, this destination provides a high-altitude retreat surrounded by ponderosa pines and crisp mountain air. It is an ideal spot for those looking to disconnect from modern technology and immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains while enjoying a quiet stay in nature.
Location & Surroundings
The park is nestled deep within the Camino Real Ranger District, characterized by its dramatic canyons and refreshing elevation. Its proximity to the Rio Santa Barbara and several high-mountain creeks makes it a vibrant environment for wildlife viewing and exploration. Travelers will appreciate the scenic drive along Highway 75 and Highway 518, which offer breathtaking vistas of northern New Mexico’s unique alpine landscape and provide a direct gateway to high-altitude adventures.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service site, the focus here is on primitive camping rather than resort-style luxury. The campground provides basic essentials for a comfortable stay in the wilderness, including:
- Gravel parking pads suitable for smaller RVs and trailers
- Standard vault toilets and waste receptacles
- Individual fire rings and picnic tables at each site
While visitors will not find full hookups, dump stations, or Wi-Fi, the spacious sites offer significant privacy and a genuine back-to-nature feel. It is important to arrive with self-contained supplies, as the remote nature of the canyon prioritizes a self-sufficient lifestyle.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, starting with the Santa Barbara Trailhead, which provides access to the vast Pecos Wilderness for hiking and horseback riding. For those seeking a bit of local culture or seasonal sports, the village of Peñasco and the nearby Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort offer year-round recreation. Additionally, the historic city of Taos is within a reasonable driving distance, allowing travelers to visit world-class art galleries before returning to the peaceful solitude of the canyon.

It was beautiful but showing up on a thursday late afternoon all the camping sutes were filled in the fron by rvs. And the further you go up, the rockier it is. Unless you have a lifted truck, I would not recommend going up further up the hill. Our suv got stuck on some rocks, and we had to turn around

The upper loop was rugged and definitely required a vehicle with clearance but had available spots even on a Saturday afternoon.
