Cathedral Pines Campground

Overview

Cathedral Pines Campground is widely regarded as one of the most scenic camping destinations in the Northeast. Located on the shores of Flagstaff Lake, the park is named for the towering stand of red pines that creates a majestic, canopy-like environment for its guests. This municipal park offers a tranquil escape where the wind through the needles provides a soothing backdrop for your stay in the Maine wilderness. Unlike bustling commercial resorts, this park focuses on preserving the natural beauty of the woods.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in the mountains of Western Maine, the campground sits just north of the village of Stratton in Eustis. The park is nestled between the Bigelow Mountain Range and the expansive waters of Flagstaff Lake. This area is rich in history, as the lake was created by flooding the Dead River valley, resulting in a unique landscape. The surrounding High Peaks region provides a dramatic skyline that changes with the light of the day, offering a true sense of isolation and peace.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides a range of facilities designed to complement its rustic setting. Visitors can make use of the on-site boat launch and sandy swimming beach to enjoy the lake's cool waters. Most sites offer water and 30-amp electrical hookups, along with essential picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings. Practical features for RVers include modern bathhouses, a playground for children, and a convenient dump station to service your rig before heading back out on the road.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities near the park. The world-famous Appalachian Trail crosses nearby, offering world-class hiking opportunities through the rugged Bigelow Preserve. For those looking for a diverse day trip, Sugarloaf Mountain is a short drive away, providing mountain biking and golfing in the summer. Fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing are primary draws for those staying right on the lakeshore, where loon calls are a common evening soundtrack.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for travelers seeking a quiet, nature-focused experience rather than a high-energy resort atmosphere. It is perfect for photographers, birdwatchers, and families who enjoy traditional outdoor activities like roasting marshmallows and paddling. If you appreciate spacious, wooded sites and the opportunity to disconnect from the digital world to reconnect with the forest, this campground is a premier choice for your Maine itinerary.

Absolutely stunning campground. We had a waterfront site, and it was gorgeous. But honestly, we walked around the whole campground, and didn’t see any bad sites. The bathrooms are updated and very clean. The views are unbeatable. And the bugs were minimal. I couldn’t recommend this place more!

Pros: - Big sites - The campground was quiet and peaceful - The staff were nice - The water in the lake is shallow so it was warm. Lots of people were swimming at the beach - The bathroom building has 6 exterior doors and each leads to a private, individual bathroom room with a toilet, shower, and sink. - The rec room is big and well organized with games and puzzles (see photos) - We often heard loons and we saw an eagle, plus cute chipmunks and red squirrels Cons: - The “cathedral pines” don’t have lower branches so you can easily see through each site. You can see and hear your neighbors. - So. Many. Spiders. There were daddy long legs EVERYWHERE. All over our site, in the firewood, crawling on our tent, crawling on our feet. They were the worst in the bathrooms. The bathroom doors and door frames were covered in big spiders and they were crawling in the walls, ceiling, and windows. We asked around and were told that they are normally much worse, hundreds more spiders, especially later in the summer. I’ve never run into this before. If you are one of the unlucky people who are scared of spiders, this might not be the campground for you. - The pricing was odd. We were two couples and we don’t have a 4-person tent, we have two 2-person tents. Because we had 2 tents on our site, we had to pay double. We ended up paying almost $120 per night. I think if we had all fit in 1 tent or 1 RV we would’ve paid about $60 per night. The staff said this is to prevent loud groups. We probably won’t come back because of the cost, it’s only $20 per night at state parks!

Clean, quiet, and picturesque. This is a campground perfect for relaxing with family. The sites are spread out for privacy. Quite a few sites have beautiful views of the lake & mountains. There’s also tons of hiking trails in the area- some easy for family and some for the experienced hiker. The campground is paved, perfect for bikes and scooters. There’s a playground and rec hall. Plenty of very nice bathroom facilities… the nicest I’ve seen for a campground. The place is pet friendly, but we never saw any out of control or loud dogs. The campground and sites are very clean and well maintained. The staff is friendly and helpful! This campground embodies Maine’s motto: “vacationland”.

This campground is a magical place nestled in among Norwegian red pines. At night there are a million stars and you can hear the loons on the lake. The bathrooms are modern and the sites lovely. I went kayaking and saw a family of otters and many blue heron. If you have a family, there are lots of kids swimming and riding their bikes around. Last but not least, the service is outstanding. As someone who has traveled extensively, I will say the people who run this campground should be teaching a master class in hospitality.

It is a very nice campground, located directly at the lake and very quiet. Bathrooms were clean. You can hire canoes and kayaks to explore the lake. There are nice play areas for children, ideal for families.
