Chequamegon-Nicolet/Morgan Lake
Overview
Morgan Lake Campground, situated within the vast Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, offers a secluded and peaceful retreat for those seeking a true connection with nature. Located near Long Lake in Florence County, Wisconsin, this destination is perfect for travelers who prefer primitive camping experiences over bustling modern resorts. The park revolves around its namesake 45-acre lake, providing a quiet atmosphere where the sounds of the forest take center stage. It serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring the rugged beauty of northern Wisconsin's dense timberlands.
Location & Surroundings
The park is nestled deep within the Northeast Wisconsin wilderness, surrounded by towering pines and hardwoods that change vibrantly with the seasons. Its location in the Florence County area places it in a region known for wild rivers and extensive trail systems. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, which spans over 1.5 million acres. This remote setting ensures dark night skies for stargazing and a thick forest canopy that provides significant privacy between individual campsites.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic forest service site, Morgan Lake prioritizes simplicity and environmental preservation. Visitors will find vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water rather than modern bathhouses or utility hookups. The campground is notable for its electric-motor-only lake policy, which ensures the water remains calm and quiet for all guests. While there are no electrical connections or dump stations, the park features a sandy swimming beach and a boat launch. Many sites are spacious enough for mid-sized RVs, provided they are fully self-contained.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with fishing for panfish and bass being a popular pastime on the tranquil waters of Morgan Lake. For those who enjoy exploring on foot or wheels, the surrounding national forest offers miles of logging roads and trails perfect for hiking and mountain biking. Just a short drive away, the Pine and Popple Wild Rivers provide opportunities for adventurous kayaking and canoeing. Wildlife viewing is also exceptional, with frequent sightings of bald eagles and loons.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is best suited for self-sufficient RVers who value solitude and a primitive aesthetic over luxury amenities. It is an excellent choice for families looking to unplug and spend time around a campfire or at the swimming beach. Because of the strict quiet-water rules, it is a haven for kayakers and anglers seeking a peaceful environment without the noise of gas-powered boat engines. If you enjoy a boondocking-style experience in a lush forest setting, Morgan Lake provides the perfect backdrop.

I grew up and learned to swim in this lake! The water is so clear! It's beautiful scenery with a great, quiet campground as well as some hiking around the lake.

Gorgeous ridge-top campsites. Getting here requires driving several miles on gravel roads, but the whole route is completely passable in a small car. Mid week in August there were numerous lakeside sites to choose from. Since the Nicolet closed Sevenmile Campground, Morgan Lake seems to be the one place that can rival the ridgetop sites and good spacing and vegetation between sites that Sevenmile offered. The campground looks to be marked for a major logging operation that could drastically change the appearance of things for a few years while the forest regenerates. As of summer 2022 the cutting hadn't started yet. Overall, definitely worth a visit.
