Overview

Cherokee/Jacobs Creek Campground, nestled within the expansive Cherokee National Forest, offers a serene escape on the shores of South Holston Lake. This USDA Forest Service facility is known for its lush, wooded environment and proximity to the tranquil waters of northeastern Tennessee. It serves as a gateway for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature and a quiet basecamp for exploring the surrounding mountain peaks and deep hardwood forests.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the unique high-mountain community of Shady Valley, the park is surrounded by majestic mountain ridges and rolling Appalachian landscapes. The campground sits directly on a peninsula of South Holston Lake, providing stunning waterfront views and cooling breezes during the humid summer months. Its secluded location makes it a prime spot for those traversing the scenic, winding roads that define this corner of the state.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features paved camping spurs that accommodate a variety of RV sizes, though many sites are best suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs. The facility focuses on providing a natural experience with essential amenities for outdoor living.

  • A developed swimming area with a lakeside beach
  • Multiple boat ramps for easy water access
  • Sturdy picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings at each site
  • Centrally located vault toilets and shared water hydrants

While the park maintains a rustic feel without individual hookups, the well-spaced sites provide plenty of privacy and shade under the dense forest canopy.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the world-class trout fishing on the South Holston River and the various hiking trails crisscrossing the Cherokee National Forest. Motorcyclists and driving enthusiasts often visit to experience The Snake, a famous stretch of Highway 421 that features hundreds of curves through the mountains. For a change of pace, the city of Bristol is nearby, offering a mix of musical heritage and famous motor racing history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and outdoor recreation over luxury resort amenities. The camp has been closed and gate locked. There is a very small area to park outside and then go run/walk the roads through the campground. An access point perfect for paddleboarding/kayaking and fishing but not much else!! I like this spot because of the peace and quiet there and the ability to spend some quality alone time with Jesus and nobody else ✝️

Beautiful Park! Swimming area is a little rocky and steep in some areas but still accessible. Gorgeous views. Right next to a beautiful little campground. Our new favorite spot!

Cool place. Great place to pull your boat up and let kids play in the shallow water. You can also meet people who are already camping here. Word to the wise: Don't wear white. The clay mud is hard to wash out. Do wear pool shoes. Rocks are rough.

Beautiful clean clear water. The camping appears to be mostly tents, a few small campers too. Very quiet area part of the Cherokee National Forrest. Several boat launches and a marina in area. This area does allow swimming. It’s not a sandy beach, but grass is available for relaxing and listening to the waves lap. Some grills and picnic tables. Worth the visit.

Stayed multiple times here and would stay again and again! The owner is fantastic, very nice, and is always excited to chat, show off his Norton’s, or that set of tires that reverse crowned so bad, the center is a peak and the sides are nearly bald. Large bathrooms and a large fire pit though you’ll have to grab firewood in town. If you ever think of staying, do it. Bikes are very welcome, and if you’re riding the snake, you won’t be more then a couple minutes from the shady valley store!
