Chewonki Campground

Overview

Chewonki Campground offers a quintessential Maine experience tucked away in the scenic Midcoast region. Established with a focus on preserving the natural beauty of the Montsweag Brook shoreline, the park provides a peaceful retreat from the busier coastal thoroughfares. It successfully combines traditional camping values with modern conveniences, creating a calm environment where the rustle of pine needles and the sound of the incoming tide define the daily pace. It is a place designed for relaxation and connecting with the rugged beauty of the Maine coast.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Wiscasset, a town often called the prettiest village in Maine, the park sits on a lush wooded peninsula. The property spans several acres of forest and tidal flats, providing guests with direct access to the water. Its proximity to Route 1 makes it an accessible base camp for exploring the rocky coast, yet it remains far enough removed to maintain a quiet, secluded atmosphere that feels worlds away from heavy tourist traffic. Travelers can enjoy both the stillness of the woods and the salt air of the estuary.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for RVers who appreciate nature without sacrificing comfort. The facility provides several key amenities to enhance your stay:

  • A refreshing saltwater swimming pool that serves as a popular gathering spot during the summer months.
  • Direct water access with kayak and canoe rentals available on-site for exploring the tidal river.
  • Spacious wooded sites that offer water and electricity hookups with a focus on privacy.
Practical features also include a well-stocked camp store, a clean laundry facility, and recreational spaces like tennis courts and a playground for visiting families.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A short drive brings you to downtown Wiscasset, where you can sample world-famous lobster rolls or browse local antique shops. Nature lovers should not miss the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in nearby Boothbay, while history buffs will appreciate the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. The area is also perfect for scenic coastal drives, leading to hidden coves, historic lighthouses, and the charming fishing villages that define the unique character of Midcoast Maine.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature-loving families and couples who seek a genuine Maine camping experience rather than a high-activity commercial resort. It appeals to travelers who value a peaceful evening by the campfire and the opportunity to paddle through serene tidal marshes. If you enjoy a mix of outdoor exploration and visiting historic coastal towns, this park offers the perfect balance of quiet solitude and convenient access to the region’s best highlights.

Beautifully kept Campground. Spectacular views. Many choices for things to do. The owners even had an ice cream social on Saturday with locally made ice cream.

We had an absolute best 5 days at Chewonki. The site we had was placed right with a perfect view of the water, a breeze and shade. We have a popup so didn't need an AC. It was so peaceful and all the people, both staff and campers were so friendly. Bath house was always clean (not a lot of places get that rating from me). Showers were hot, pool was awesome. I can't think of any negatives. We WILL be back to this campground. 1 hour or so from Boothbay, Popham and a grandchild. Who could ask for more.

Great camping near downtown Wiscasset. Pretty views & friendly staff. They also have tennis/pickleball court & swimming pool. We didn’t use either. All sites have a picnic table and fire pit too. No internet or cable which makes work a bit difficult, however cell reception is solid (AT&T) No problem getting to/from with a large Class A + Tow vehicle. All RV sites are gravel pad which I don’t mind. Full hookups 30/50 amp. Water pressure is on the lower side. Filled the tank and used onboard pump instead. Could use some more shade trees at the larger sites but very roomy. You’re in a field baking in the sun. Most of the treed sites are for smaller campers or tent site w/o hookups. Also a dock you could launch a canoe or kayak from as well as fish.

Our bicycling group had a great stay at Chewonki. We had a long, hilly, windy ride and were so tired when we got to camp. Pam and Ann greeted us, showed us arround, helped us out in many ways to recover and get ready for the next day. Thank you so much for a great stay.
