Chickasaw/Buckhorn
Overview
Located on the eastern shores of the scenic Lake of the Arbuckles, the Chickasaw Buckhorn Campground offers a refreshing escape into the heart of Oklahoma nature. As part of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, this facility provides a unique blend of historical significance and modern recreational opportunities. It is widely recognized for its well-maintained sites and proximity to the diverse ecosystems of the Arbuckle Mountains, making it a staple for regional travelers. The park operates across four distinct loops, providing a variety of settings for visitors.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated in Sulphur, Oklahoma, in a unique transition zone where the eastern deciduous forests meet the western prairies. Visitors are surrounded by ancient geological formations and the shimmering waters of one of the state's most popular lakes. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands, providing a sense of seclusion while remaining easily accessible. The area serves as a vital habitat for local wildlife, and the air is often filled with the scent of oak and cedar trees that line the lakeshore.
Amenities & Park Features
Buckhorn caters to modern RVers with several loops offering electric and water hookups suitable for various rig sizes, including larger motorhomes. The park features paved pads and pull-through sites, which help with leveling in the undulating terrain. Guests have access to modern restrooms and showers, as well as convenient dump stations located near the entrance. Each site typically includes a picnic table, a fire ring, and a grill, facilitating a comfortable outdoor living experience. For those bringing watercraft, the park provides easy access to multiple boat ramps.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Lake of the Arbuckles, which is a premier destination for bass fishing, kayaking, and motorized boating. Just a short drive away, travelers can explore the Travertine District to see the famous freshwater springs and Little Niagara Falls, a popular swimming spot. For a deeper understanding of the region's heritage, the Chickasaw Cultural Center offers world-class exhibits and performances. Hikers can also enjoy miles of trails that wind through the recreation area, offering glimpses of bison and spring-fed creeks.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and boaters who prioritize direct water access and scenic hiking trails. Because it offers reliable hookups within a National Recreation Area, it is a perfect middle ground for those who want a rustic feel without sacrificing essential comforts. Beautiful camp grounds, spacious and clean. The lake is great for fishing or swimming. The shower and restrooms were usually clean. So my hubby and I stayed at 055C in Loop C. It is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and super shady!! And the water was warm all night long!! But it is NOT very private. It is very close to the water and easy to get in and out of the water. There is a 2 car parking space and the other camping spot that is right next to 055C is right next to it, so they will be VERY close if someone has rented that spot. And the raccoons will 100% steal your UNOPENED bags of chips!!🤣🤣🤣

This is the most beautiful campground I have ever been to! Stayed by myself and felt very safe. Site host is kind and welcoming and always available. Restrooms and showers are so clean. They did a beautiful job with privacy between sites too. Our new favorite spot!

We focused our trip on the little Niagara Falls and hiked up the creek from there stopping at the visitor center. Great information at the visitor center and in the brochures produced by the national parks. Highly recommend going up to Buffalo Springs. Very cool to see the Civilian Conservation Corps pool enclosure and to sit quietly while the spring bubbles up. Excellent experience of nature.
