Chicken Creek RV Park

Overview

Chicken Creek RV Park offers a unique gateway into the historic gold rush spirit of interior Alaska. Located in the quirky community of Chicken, this park serves as a vital stop for travelers navigating the Taylor Highway. It provides a rustic yet welcoming environment where the heritage of the region is celebrated through preserved machinery and local stories. The atmosphere is authentically Alaskan, offering a sense of community among those journeying through the remote wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at Mile 66.4 of the Taylor Highway, the park is surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Fortymile River region. This is a land of rolling hills, dense forests, and winding creeks where gold mining is still a way of life. The remote location means visitors can enjoy incredibly clear night skies and a quiet that is hard to find elsewhere. It serves as an essential hub for those planning to cross into the Yukon via the Top of the World Highway.

Amenities & Park Features

While the setting is remote, the park provides essential comforts for the modern traveler. Facilities include full and partial hookup sites designed to accommodate various RV sizes. On-site, guests can access clean restrooms, hot showers, and laundry facilities. The park is connected to the Chicken Gold Camp, which features an outpost with a gift shop, a cafe serving homemade pies, and a saloon for evening relaxation. There is also a dedicated area for gold panning demonstrations.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

History buffs will appreciate being within walking distance of the Pedro Dredge, a massive gold-mining machine designated as a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can also explore the historic Tisha's Schoolhouse or take part in active gold panning in the nearby creeks. For outdoor enthusiasts, the area offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography, with moose and caribou often spotted in the surrounding valleys.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for adventurous RVers who prioritize historical charm and unique experiences over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for those traveling the route between Tok and Dawson City who need a reliable place to rest. Travelers with an interest in Alaskan history or those looking to try their luck at gold mining will find the park's atmosphere and location particularly rewarding.

The Goldpanner was decent and clean overall. One star is because I left some headphones here accidentally. Someone from the place contacted me afterwards and wanted to know where they could mail/return them to me. Sounds good? Not exactly. A couple months later I phoned them to check the status, but I believe they were closed for the season. I can check the whereabouts of the headphones on Apple's "Find My" app. Lo and behold they're walking around down there off of the Tok Cutoff Highway, and have been for the past year. Might be a clean place to stay, but they apparently hire/staff the place with untrustworthy people. Hard no from me.

⭐️⭐️ 2 out of 5 stars Stayed at the Gold Panner RV Campground in Chicken, Alaska. It was $45 with electricity, $35 without — but no water or sewer hookups. There is a dump station, but due to the poor angle, we couldn’t dump anything, which was frustrating. Electricity is only 110V — no 30 or 50 amp. Freshwater is available, but at a separate location. Overall, not worth the cost. Especially when there’s free camping available by Chicken Creek Café that’s less crowded. This place was a miss for us — I wouldn’t stay here again.

A must stop if you're traveling thru this part of Alaska. I camped here twice in my RV during Chickenstock, and it was an absolute blast. We stayed here again when we made the drive to Dawson for the famous sourtoe cocktail. There are no bad places in Chicken. Absolutely a gem of a stop. Make sure to take a photo with the giant metal chicken statue!

This is a small cafe/gift shop combined in Chicken, Alaska. We stopped here for our lunch... The group had their lunch ordered in advance. I was looking for a vegetarian option. The ladies were very accommodating and made me an excellent cheese sandwich with onion & peppers. The room where we had lunch was very clean.
