Chilkoot Lake Rec Site

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site offers an authentic Alaskan wilderness experience located just a short drive from Haines. This destination is defined by its pristine glacial lake and the towering mountains that frame the horizon. As a rustic campground, it provides a serene escape for travelers seeking to disconnect from the grid and immerse themselves in the raw, natural beauty of Southeast Alaska. It is a place where nature takes center stage and the pace of life slows down significantly.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled along the banks of the Chilkoot River and the shores of Chilkoot Lake, the site is situated in one of the most scenic corridors in the region. The surroundings are characterized by lush temperate rainforests and abundant wildlife, including frequent sightings of coastal brown bears and bald eagles. The road leading to the park offers dramatic vistas, making the arrival as memorable as the stay itself, while the lake provides a stunning backdrop for sunsets.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is designed for those who appreciate the simplicity of public land camping. While the site does not offer full utility hookups, it provides essential features such as well-maintained vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic areas. Most sites are nestled among mature trees, offering a degree of privacy and protection from the elements. The area is also highly valued for its boat launch facilities, which grant easy access to the clear waters of the lake for fishing and exploration.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The Chilkoot River is a world-class destination for anglers, particularly during the salmon runs. Visitors frequently spend their days fly fishing or kayaking through the tranquil lake waters. Photographers often head to the river corridor during peak wildlife activity to capture images of brown bears feeding on salmon. Beyond the water, the surrounding wilderness is home to several hiking trails that offer deeper access to the rugged landscape and pristine high-altitude vistas found throughout the Haines valley.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation site is perfectly suited for self-contained RVers and tent campers who prefer a primitive camping style over modern resort luxury. It is an ideal choice for outdoor enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, and anglers who want to wake up right in the heart of prime salmon country. If your goal is to experience the quiet grandeur of the Alaskan wilderness, this park will provide exactly the kind of peaceful, nature-focused retreat you are looking for.

Make sure to go wade into the river and perch up on a bolder! This is a special place. Paved all the way, perfect blue sky day.

Nice public boat ramp, rarely a delay to launch or retrieve your boat. I went for photography (many were there fishing, which is great in season) boat docks are nice, sometimes bear are on the docks. Beautiful area.

Was here in May recently on an excursion with the cruise stop at Skagway. It was a canoe safari to see wildlife but not much canoeing as we had a motorised canoe out to the lake. Unfortunately did not see any bear or other wildlife except birds. Overall the excursion was ok although the price was a bit high. We had to take a ferry to and from Skagway and then a small van to Chilkoot lake. The tour guide was informative and there was also some commentary on the ferry ride.

Not much to it, but a lovely place for some solitude if you want it. There is a small boat launch where tour groups from the cruise ships head out from and a small campground. The lake is absolutely beautiful. Beware, there are plenty of bears in the area so don't be stupid.

We did a bicycle riding tour from halfway down the Lukat Inlet up to Chilkoot Lake. Honestly, the lake itself, while nice, wasn't the highlight. The highlight was more of the journey along the road. As we cycled we saw the inlet a low tide and later at high tide; a marked difference - boats went from resting on a mud flat to being afloat. We saw a Grizzly/Kodiak feasting at the Weir. We saw eagles and nests in several spots, with a few being fairly close (I do have a decent lens). We also passed several small waterfalls you might not notice if rushing by in a vehicle. The morning fog made for an interesting view of the inlet.
