Chippewa/Cass Lake Loop
Overview
The Chippewa/Cass Lake Loop serves as a premier destination within the Norway Beach Recreation Area, nestled deep inside the Chippewa National Forest. This park offers a tranquil setting where travelers can find a harmonious blend of rugged natural beauty and developed camping conveniences. Unlike more commercialized resorts, this loop provides a genuine forest experience under a canopy of towering red and white pines, making it a standout choice for those seeking a peaceful retreat in Northern Minnesota.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the scenic southeastern shores of Cass Lake, the park is surrounded by a diverse landscape of wetlands and dense timber. The environment is defined by its pristine air and the sounds of local wildlife, including a significant population of bald eagles. The location provides easy access to the water while maintaining a sense of seclusion, allowing RVers to feel fully immersed in the Chippewa National Forest while remaining only a short drive from the local services in the town of Cass Lake.
Amenities & Park Features
One of the most appreciated features of this loop is the presence of paved camping pads, which offer level parking for various RV sizes. Many of the sites are equipped with electric hookups, catering to modern travelers who need power while enjoying the woods. The park includes access to pressurized water, flush toilets, and shower facilities located within the recreation area. Additionally, the loop connects directly to the Migizi Trail, a popular paved path for biking and hiking that winds through the forest landscape.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a paradise for water enthusiasts, with world-class fishing for walleye, muskie, and northern pike on Cass Lake. Boating and kayaking are popular ways to explore the interconnected lake chain. On land, visitors can visit the historic Norway Beach Visitor Center to learn about the region's cultural history. For a unique day trip, the Lost 40 Scientific and Natural Area is nearby, offering a rare opportunity to walk among ancient trees that were never touched by the logging industry.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an excellent fit for nature lovers and active couples who prioritize scenery and trail access over poolside entertainment. It is especially well-suited for cyclists and hikers due to its proximity to well-maintained trail systems. While it provides essential utilities, it is best for those who enjoy a quieter, more traditional camping atmosphere. If your ideal trip involves waking up to the sound of loons and spending your days on the water or in the woods, this is the park for you.

Beautiful campground, we really loved our site! Quiet for being so big. We enjoyed our stay, the lake being a short walk away was a huge plus. It’s gorgeous! We will come back if we pull our camper up here again. The only reason I can’t give it a 5 is for the bathrooms. As mentioned, they are filthy. We don’t have a toilet in our camper, so we fully rely on the facilities campgrounds provide. I’m not sure these ones have seen any sort of cleaning product in a long while. I know, we are camping and a little roughing it is good for the soul and all, but I advise you to triple check your shower shoes are packed if you plan on using their showers. However, being as dirty as they were, I got a nice hot shower! Can’t complain too terribly much about a hot, free shower. Just be aware!

The area is beautiful and camp sites are very nice. They seem to have two sites close together and then generous space. So, bring a friend or be ready to make a friend next door. The bathrooms are generally clean, but the main reason I couldn't give five stars. The floor needs painting and whoever painted the walls really didn't care at all about what they were doing. (See photos) I would go back. The shore is sandy and shallow for a long ways out. However, it is prone to swimmers itch in warmer months. I came here water skiing when I was younger several times and I never remember having any issues, but they have warnings posted. The water doesn't seem to get to rough for a bigger lake. Good for water sports and paddling.

This was our second stay at this National Forest campground, though our first time leaving a review. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. The Chippewa Loop at Norway Beach offers quiet, secluded sites with easy access to Cass Lake—perfect for paddling, fishing, or simply soaking in the natural beauty. The peaceful atmosphere and wooded setting are hard to beat. That said, the shower house could use some serious attention. While functional, the cinder-block structure is dated, and the hot water tends to run out quickly—resulting in some bracingly cold showers. A few simple, low-cost improvements like solar water heaters, radiant heat, or better insulation could make a big difference in comfort. Despite that, the serenity and lake access keep this campground high on our list. With a few facility upgrades, it has the potential to be a true 5-star destination.

The entire Norway Beach Recreation Area is closed. Its paet of the Chippewa National Forest. Please remember, how you vote matters. Thank you, Mr. Donald Trump for shutting down our National Forest service employees. Logs down across roads and grass not mowed. Picnic tables tipped over. Gates closing off all the roads to the campground loops and the visitor information area has not opened since fall of 2024.

We have been coming here as a family off and on for 20ish years. We stayed in the 100's electric loop. We definitely felt intimidated and uneasy with what the lower loop of 112-124 looked like. Some territorial things going on down at the beach. Seems as if some of these first come first served campsites down by the water may be occupied longer than the 14 days. Still a very beautiful campground, but order seems to be lost.
