Chippewa/Winnie

Overview

Chippewa/Winnie, situated within the heart of the Chippewa National Forest near Cass Lake, offers a quintessential Northwoods experience. This destination is anchored by the massive Lake Winnibigoshish, which is the fifth-largest lake in Minnesota. The atmosphere here is centered on the serenity of the forest and the rhythm of the water. Unlike modern urban parks, this area focuses on a rustic, natural environment where the call of the loon and the rustle of towering pines define the stay. It is a premier location for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the great outdoors without the distractions of city life.

Location & Surroundings

Located in North Central Minnesota, the park is surrounded by over 660,000 acres of protected forest land. The geography is characterized by a blend of old-growth timber and expansive wetlands. Being in the Cass Lake region means visitors are positioned near the Leech Lake Reservation, providing a rich cultural backdrop to the natural beauty. The shoreline of Lake Winnie is largely undeveloped, offering campers a rare sense of privacy and a front-row seat to one of the highest densities of nesting bald eagles in the lower 48 states.

Amenities & Park Features

The facilities at Chippewa/Winnie are designed to complement the rugged surroundings while providing essential comforts for RVers. Many of the designated campsites offer electric hookups, though the layout prioritizes spacing and privacy over high-density lodging. The park features multiple well-maintained boat launches, making it easy for visitors to get onto the water. For land-based recreation, the paved Migizi Trail provides miles of accessible paths for hiking and cycling. Guests also have access to clean pressurized water, fire rings, and picnic tables at nearly every site to facilitate traditional campfire evenings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is the main attraction, as Lake Winnibigoshish is legendary for its walleye and jumbo perch populations. Beyond the docks, the nearby Lost Forty area allows visitors to walk among massive pines that were spared by loggers in the 1800s. A short drive away, the city of Cass Lake offers local dining and the Palace Casino for indoor entertainment. Nature lovers can also explore the various interpretive trails throughout the Chippewa National Forest or visit the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Itasca State Park, which is located within a reasonable driving distance.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for serious anglers and wildlife photographers who value proximity to the water and undisturbed habitats. It caters perfectly to RVers who enjoy a self-contained camping style and prefer the sounds of nature over resort-style amenities like swimming pools or clubhouses. Families looking to teach their children about conservation and outdoor skills will find the forest setting highly educational. If your travel goal is to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the wilderness, this Minnesota gem is exactly what you are looking for.

Beautiful campground, we really loved our site! Quiet for being so big. We enjoyed our stay, the lake being a short walk away was a huge plus. It’s gorgeous! We will come back if we pull our camper up here again. The only reason I can’t give it a 5 is for the bathrooms. As mentioned, they are filthy. We don’t have a toilet in our camper, so we fully rely on the facilities campgrounds provide. I’m not sure these ones have seen any sort of cleaning product in a long while. I know, we are camping and a little roughing it is good for the soul and all, but I advise you to triple check your shower shoes are packed if you plan on using their showers. However, being as dirty as they were, I got a nice hot shower! Can’t complain too terribly much about a hot, free shower. Just be aware!

The area is beautiful and camp sites are very nice. They seem to have two sites close together and then generous space. So, bring a friend or be ready to make a friend next door. The bathrooms are generally clean, but the main reason I couldn't give five stars. The floor needs painting and whoever painted the walls really didn't care at all about what they were doing. (See photos) I would go back. The shore is sandy and shallow for a long ways out. However, it is prone to swimmers itch in warmer months. I came here water skiing when I was younger several times and I never remember having any issues, but they have warnings posted. The water doesn't seem to get to rough for a bigger lake. Good for water sports and paddling.

This was our second stay at this National Forest campground, though our first time leaving a review. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. The Chippewa Loop at Norway Beach offers quiet, secluded sites with easy access to Cass Lake—perfect for paddling, fishing, or simply soaking in the natural beauty. The peaceful atmosphere and wooded setting are hard to beat. That said, the shower house could use some serious attention. While functional, the cinder-block structure is dated, and the hot water tends to run out quickly—resulting in some bracingly cold showers. A few simple, low-cost improvements like solar water heaters, radiant heat, or better insulation could make a big difference in comfort. Despite that, the serenity and lake access keep this campground high on our list. With a few facility upgrades, it has the potential to be a true 5-star destination.

We have been coming here as a family off and on for 20ish years. We stayed in the 100's electric loop. We definitely felt intimidated and uneasy with what the lower loop of 112-124 looked like. Some territorial things going on down at the beach. Seems as if some of these first come first served campsites down by the water may be occupied longer than the 14 days. Still a very beautiful campground, but order seems to be lost.

A week ago we camped with friends for a couple of days. Very disappointed in the maintenance and non upkeep in the park. We camped for many years in Chippewa Loop and loved the campgrounds. We had a 5 year break and it is noticeably run down. No hot water, shower house very dirty. The park is so beautiful and needs to continue to keep up the basics to draw visitors and campers!
