Chiricahua National Monument/Bonita Canyon
Overview
Overview
Bonita Canyon Campground, situated within the breathtaking Chiricahua National Monument, offers a tranquil escape into the heart of Arizona's volcanic landscape. This National Park Service facility provides an authentic, rustic camping experience, immersing visitors in a quiet environment where the stunning "Wonderland of Rocks" serves as your backyard. It is an ideal spot for those seeking to disconnect from the noise of modern life and reconnect with the raw, natural beauty of the high desert.
Location & Surroundings
Located near Willcox, AZ, the park is nestled deep within a canyon surrounded by towering rhyolite spires and lush forest vegetation. The elevation provides a cooler climate than the surrounding desert floor, making it a comfortable destination during spring and fall. Travelers will find themselves situated in a remote wilderness setting, providing a unique vantage point to observe the dramatic geological formations that define this iconic Southwestern landscape.
Amenities & Park Features
As a national park facility, Bonita Canyon focuses on a primitive-style experience rather than luxury amenities. The campground offers paved RV sites that accommodate vehicles up to 29 feet in length, though it lacks water, sewer, or electrical hookups. Guests have access to flushing toilets and potable water stations, along with picnic tables and metal fire rings at each site. This simple, well-maintained environment is designed to keep the focus firmly on the surrounding natural wonders.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of this location is the extensive network of scenic hiking trails that originate near the campground. Visitors can explore the Echo Canyon Trail or take the drive to Massai Point for panoramic vistas of the rock formations. Birdwatchers often visit this area due to its location within a major migratory flyway, making it a premier birding destination in Arizona. The nearby Faraway Ranch historic site also offers a fascinating glimpse into the area’s pioneer heritage.
Who This Park Is Best For
Bonita Canyon is best suited for nature-focused RVers who enjoy dry camping and solitude. It is a fantastic choice for those who value quiet nights, dark skies perfect for stargazing, and immediate access to hiking trailheads. Because of the size limitations and lack of hookups, it is specifically ideal for owners of smaller travel trailers, camper vans, or truck campers who prefer an unplugged, peaceful wilderness retreat over resort-style campgrounds.

The visitor center is a few minutes in as you drive in from the toll booth. The parking was super limited and was already full even on a weekday. There's an accessible sidewalk, including a ramp up to the entrance. The exhibit room is single floor accessible, and they had various displays on the area- very nice mini museum. They also sell a nice assortment of snacks. The visitor center is close by the forested section of the park's trail.

We were vertical surprised at how unique the park.was. We had never heard of it before. We were looking for a place to go next, and Alltrails had several good looking hikes there. So we went, and are very glad we did it was wonderful - so interesting. Bryce on steroids.

Great place to visit! Staff was great! Everything clean! Views were amazing! Not busy but the weather was a bit cold and rainy so people may have stayed home. Really a hidden gem in southern AZ a lot like Bryce Canyon but not as colorful but the views were every bit as nice to me.

Such an underrated park! Beautiful, quiet, and the best part not many people!!! Definitely recommend the view from Sugar Loaf and then doing the canyon loop for alternative perspectives. While the park is small and not busy, the parking lots are also very very small. Highly recommend getting to the loop parking lot before 8:30am on a weekend if you want parking. There are not many spaces. We didn’t have any issues parking at SugarLoaf. Seriously such a great park! We loved it!
