Choinumni Park
Overview
Choinumni Park offers a serene escape nestled along the banks of the Kings River in the scenic foothills of Fresno County. As a Fresno County park, it provides a natural and unpretentious camping environment for those looking to disconnect. The park is named after the Choinumni tribe who originally inhabited the area, and it maintains a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the nearby city bustle. It serves as a gateway to the southern Sierra Nevada mountains, offering a blend of historical significance and outdoor recreation.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Piedra, California, the park is situated just below the Pine Flat Dam. The landscape is defined by rolling hills, ancient oak trees, and the flowing waters of the Kings River. This setting provides a lush riparian habitat that stays greener than much of the surrounding Valley floor during the summer months. The drive to the park is scenic, winding through agricultural lands before reaching the rugged beauty of the foothills, making the scenic approach a memorable part of the travel experience.
Amenities & Park Features
This park is designed for those who enjoy a more rustic camping experience. It features large, shaded campsites equipped with individual picnic tables and fire rings. While there are no hookups for RVs, the park provides essential facilities to ensure a comfortable stay:
- Clean restrooms and hot showers
- A well-maintained children’s playground
- Direct river access points for recreation
Large grassy areas provide plenty of room for group activities or a quiet afternoon under the oak canopy, making it a functional choice for self-contained travelers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the proximity to Pine Flat Lake, where visitors can enjoy boating, jet skiing, and swimming just a short drive away. Anglers frequently visit Choinumni Park for trout fishing along the Kings River, which is well-known for its seasonal runs. For those who prefer land-based activities, there are local trails for hiking and bird watching. Additionally, the park is a popular launching point for river rafting and kayaking excursions when water levels are appropriate for downstream travel.
Who This Park Is Best For
Choinumni Park is an ideal destination for nature lovers and RV campers who prefer self-contained setups over luxury resorts. It is perfect for families seeking a budget-friendly weekend getaway and fishing enthusiasts who want to be steps away from the water. Because of its quiet nature, it also appeals to those looking for a basecamp to explore the Sierra Nevada foothills without the crowds found in larger national parks. It is best suited for travelers who value natural beauty and a slower pace.

Quick escape to Choinumni Campground on the Kings River. It's the perfect spot for a peaceful getaway. The area is steeped in history as the traditional homeland of the Choinumni people. The campsites are well-maintained, and the sound of the river is incredibly relaxing. A great place to unwind, cook up some good food, and just enjoy being outdoors.

Beautiful place. Very walkable with lots of little rock paths and big space. The current can get pretty strong but there are several little areas of still water that are super pretty to relax by and look at.

Big campground lots of different sites but choice wisely ,during the week it's nice quiet, laid back and people follow the rules and are respectful however the weekends get busy and rude people with no respect loud music all night then back on by 9 or 10 ,rules don't seem to apply on the weekends , no showers, and hard to clean up ,good fishing spots and the hosts are friendly
