Chugach/Russian River

RV Park

Overview

Overview

The Chugach/Russian River Campground offers a quintessential Alaskan wilderness experience situated at the junction of the Kenai and Russian Rivers. This destination is deeply connected to the natural landscape, providing a rustic and scenic environment that appeals to those looking to immerse themselves in the outdoors. It serves as a beautiful base camp for visitors drawn to the rugged beauty of the Kenai Peninsula, focusing on simplicity and direct access to the region’s legendary natural resources.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the heart of Cooper Landing, Alaska, the campground is surrounded by the dramatic mountain ranges of the Chugach National Forest. The area is defined by its proximity to glacial-fed rivers and dense boreal forests, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels miles away from civilization despite its accessibility off the Sterling Highway. Travelers can enjoy expansive views and the peaceful sounds of rushing water just steps away from their designated campsites, highlighting the pristine character of the Alaskan wilderness.

Amenities & Park Features

While this is a public campground managed by the Forest Service, it provides essential facilities for self-contained RVs and campers. Guests will find well-maintained gravel pads that accommodate various vehicle sizes, along with fire rings and picnic tables for outdoor dining. Because this is a primitive-style facility, visitors should prepare for a back-to-basics experience, as the park does not offer full utility hookups. The focus remains on spacious, wooded campsites that prioritize privacy and natural immersion.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area is globally recognized for its world-class fishing, particularly for sockeye salmon during the seasonal runs. The Russian River Falls trail is a must-visit, offering a moderate hike that culminates in stunning wildlife viewing opportunities, including potential bear sightings during salmon season. Visitors can also explore the local Kenai River trails or participate in guided raft trips through the scenic canyons. These activities make the campground an ideal home base for anglers and hiking enthusiasts alike.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is perfect for outdoor-focused travelers who value scenery and quiet over modern luxury resort amenities. It is an excellent fit for those who are fully self-contained and looking to spend their days on the water or deep in the forest. If you appreciate a peaceful night under the stars and want easy access to prime Alaskan fishing and hiking, this park offers an authentic, memorable stay.

Drove 1.5 hours to Russian River Campground at 5 AM only to find out they are cash-only, which is not clearly stated anywhere online. There’s also no ATM nearby, and the closest option was all the way back in Soldotna (earlier than 7-8am). Completely wasted trip. Room for Improvement Clearly state “cash-only” on the website Provide a working ATM nearby Accept other payment methods Great location, but poor communication and limited payment options make it frustrating.

This is a great park in a great location. If you hit the salmon run at the right time you can be right in the middle of the action without having to fight as much for parking. We missed the run by a few weeks, but loved our stay. We have a 44’ fifth wheel and the loops are too tight for our trailer. But we reserved a site right at the entrance to the loop and were able to get in with a little effort. There’s plenty of privacy. We enjoyed our stay and would go back.

Love this park! Beautiful walkway along River. Saw bears, eagles and lots of people fishing . Private campsites. Need reservation but we were able to get one during the height of fishing season. Keep checking website for cancellations.

Sites are wooded, with lots of room between each one. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Very well maintained trails. Easy steps down to the river. Beautiful views in every direction. Fishing is great! Bonus: you might see a bear or two.
