Clark State Forest

Overview

Clark State Forest, established in 1903 as Indiana’s oldest state forest, offers a sprawling 24,000-acre retreat in Henryville. It is a destination for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature rather than the polished amenities of a commercial resort. The forest provides a rugged back-to-basics atmosphere that prioritizes quietude and outdoor recreation over modern luxuries. RVers will find a peaceful setting among the hardwoods of southern Indiana, perfect for a true boondocking experience within a historic landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Southern Indiana, the forest is easily accessible from I-65, yet it feels worlds away from the noise of the highway. The landscape is defined by rolling hills and dense timberland, providing a scenic backdrop for every campsite. The surrounding area of Henryville retains a rural charm, while the forest itself serves as a gateway to the famous Knobstone Trail, which stretches across the most rugged terrain in the region, offering dramatic views and significant elevation changes.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping facilities here are designed for simplicity. RVers should note that these are primitive sites, meaning there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the individual pads. The park features specific amenities for self-sufficient travelers, including:

  • Equestrian-friendly campsites with direct access to horse trails.
  • Access to Franke and Schlamm Lakes for fishing and electric-motor boating.
  • Basic necessities such as pit toilets and seasonal water hydrants located within the campground areas.

Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring for traditional campouts under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 150 miles of trails, including the challenging trek on the Knobstone Trail or the various loop trails around the lakes. Fishing at Bowen Lake is a popular pastime for those looking for a relaxing afternoon on the water. For a change of pace, the city of Louisville, Kentucky is a short drive south, offering urban amenities and historical sites. Additionally, the Deam Lake State Recreation Area is nearby, providing more swimming and boating options during the summer months.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prefer dry camping and scenic isolation over concrete pads and swimming pools. It is best suited for those who enjoy hiking, fishing, or horseback riding and don't mind the absence of a modern bathhouse or Wi-Fi. If your travel style focuses on wildlife viewing and quiet nights in the timberland, Clark State Forest provides the perfect primitive escape in the heart of Indiana’s oldest forest lands.

If you wanted to fish, hike, play, walk/run, enjoy the outdoors this is definitely the place. As a photographer I saw a multitude of options for future photo sessions!

I've always loved this woodland area. We were fishing here this visit but it's also a good place for hiking and picnics. There is a gun range. There is a small playground for the young ones.

I've been coming to this park since I was about 6 years old, which is 40 years ago. Sad to see that you can't climb the fire tower anymore. That used to be one of my favorite things to do there. There's plenty of things to see at this park and indecent fishing. Definitely watch your speed going towards the fire tower because the road is narrow and some people drive like idiots back there be careful.

I love this place. I travel from Louisville and take my boat and sometimes just go to bank fish. This place has everything to keep you busy. Walking trails, bike trails, many different small lakes. You can kayak/boat (no gas motors, only troll), outdoor gun range, camping, and fire tower. I believe you can only boat in 3 of the lakes and bank fish in all of them. This state park is Hugh so don't get lost!

Beautiful forest. Mostly looking around as this is one of the few we had never visited. The campground looks very nice and it looks like the horse trails would be a lot of fun! It would be nice if there were a few more hiking trails and places to pull over and get pictures of the view. Disappointed that the fire tower is still closed. You can't eat the view from the top of one!
