Clatsop State Forest/Henry Rierson Spruce Run Campground
Overview
Henry Rierson Spruce Run Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest experience tucked within the lush Clatsop State Forest. Managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry, this campground sits along the banks of the Nehalem River, providing a serene escape from the more crowded coastal destinations. It is a place where the air is thick with the scent of pine and the background noise is dominated by the gentle flow of water. This site is widely appreciated for its natural beauty and seclusion, offering a tranquil environment for those looking to reconnect with the outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 20 miles east of Seaside, the campground is nestled in a valley where Douglas-fir and Western hemlock trees create a dense, emerald canopy. The location serves as a gateway to the rugged interior of the Northern Coast Range, far enough from the Pacific to escape the coastal fog but close enough to enjoy the ocean breeze. The Nehalem River winds directly alongside the park, creating picturesque riverfront sites that offer immediate access to the water for wading or relaxing on the shore.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive forest camp, visitors should expect a dry camping experience without electrical, water, or sewer hookups. The campground features well-spaced sites that include heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings. While there are no modern restrooms, vault toilets and potable water are available during the peak season. Many of the sites are large enough for smaller to mid-sized RVs and trailers, though the roads are narrow and require careful navigation. The focus here is on simplicity and self-sufficiency, making it a favorite for traditional campers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many visitors is the fishing and wildlife viewing available directly from the riverbanks. Just a short drive away, the Jewell Meadows Wildlife Area offers a rare opportunity to observe large herds of Roosevelt elk in their natural habitat. For those who enjoy a physical challenge, the nearby Saddle Mountain State Natural Area features a steep but rewarding trail that provides 360-degree views of the coastline and the Cascades on clear days. The shops and beaches of Seaside are also accessible for a quick day trip.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is best suited for self-contained RVers who enjoy a rustic, off-grid lifestyle. It is an ideal spot for nature photographers, anglers, and families who want to trade their screens for a riverfront retreat. Because the park operates on a first-come, first-served basis and lacks hookups, it appeals most to adventurous travelers who prefer the quiet of the forest over the amenities of a commercial resort. If you value privacy and a deep connection to the woods, this hidden gem is a perfect match.

Nice campground and day use area. Each site has table and fire place. Drinking water is available from a manual pump near a campsite. The day use area has limited gravel parking, tables and fire places. Easy access to the river. No litter. Restrooms had pit toilets but were clean. Pay fee for camping at host site. Was posted $15. Day use appears to be free. The drive in is on a narrow winding paved road.

The camp hosts Dale and his wife are the best! They are hands down the absolute best camp hosts I've had the pleasure of meeting. Always outside waiting to help folks! I had issues with a solar generator and they would let me charge it off of their unit! Never ever got that help from anywhere or any other camp hosts. I stayed two extra days because I was treated so kindly. Primitive sites with fire wood for sale with a smile.

Beautiful Area and Very Well Maintained and Great Place to Relax In a Peaceful Setting But Also Very Popular So Get Reservations Way Ahead Of Time. Too Bad The Rest Of The Mountain Is Private Property Now and Not Very Camper Friendly.

Great stay with my daughter. Camp hosts were friendly, attentive & helpful. Camp sites were clean, bathrooms were well kept & accessible , there was a trail from campsite down to river access , it's not wheelchair friendly but a nice convenience otherwise

Great spot for some camping. Couple trails to walk around. Right on the river. Sites are well maintained with a great staff. Crawfish all over the river. I didn't find a really good spot to fish on the river. 4 miles or from the camp site you can go to lost lake.
