Clear Lake

Overview

Clear Lake State Park in Kelseyville, California, offers an immersive escape on the shores of the oldest lake in North America. This destination serves as a tranquil retreat for travelers looking to experience the rugged beauty of Lake County. The park provides a blend of water-based recreation and upland exploration, set against a backdrop of volcanic peaks and ancient oak groves. It is a premier choice for those seeking a natural lakeside environment away from the crowds of more urbanized coastal destinations.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled on the western shore of Clear Lake, the park is situated just outside the charming town of Kelseyville. The landscape is dominated by the majestic presence of Mt. Konocti, an ancient volcano that provides a dramatic skyline for campers. Visitors are surrounded by a diverse ecosystem that includes tule marshes, rolling hills, and dense forests. This unique geography makes the park a transition point between the expansive water and the high-elevation volcanic terrain of the surrounding valley.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features four distinct campgrounds, including Kelsey Creek and Lower Bayview, which offer a variety of settings for RV travelers. While the park maintains a rustic feel, it provides several essential facilities to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • Efficient four-lane boat launches that provide quick access for anglers and recreational boaters.
  • Accessible restrooms with showers and a centrally located RV dump station for guest use.
  • An informative Visitor Center that highlights the local natural history and the cultural heritage of the Pomo people.

Many sites are nestled under the shade of massive valley oaks, providing a cool respite during the warm summer months.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a major draw here, as Clear Lake is frequently ranked as one of the best largemouth bass locations in the United States. Beyond the water, hikers can tackle the Dorn Trail for panoramic lake views or the Indian Nature Trail for an educational walk through the flora of the region. The surrounding area of Kelseyville is famous for its pear orchards and boutique wineries, offering a sophisticated tasting experience that showcases the unique terroir of the Lake County AVA.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for outdoor adventurers and families who prioritize nature and recreation over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for kayakers, birdwatchers, and anglers who want immediate water access. Because the park offers a more authentic experience without full hookups, it is best suited for RVers who enjoy a traditional camping style or have self-contained systems while exploring the undiscovered wine country of Northern California.

Pretty with nice little beach at swim area. Life vests available just hanging to borrow. No dogs on the beach or in the water but good place for walks.

My family has been camping here since the 40's still just as it always was. Water isn't as clear as when I was a child but it's still a place of beauty and wonderful memories for us. I'm here now solo camping and fishing for 4 days. All the amenities you'll need are close by and just a short drive.

Top of the notch state Park. The lake is stunning, you can easily swim, kayak or paddle board, fishing is also popular. You can camp just reserve in advance they sell firewood for $10 bucks. I went in early April and the weather was super nice, sunny, and perfect for a day at the lake, it did get cold at night def bring a jacket. The soil is quite moist because of proximity to the lake so make sure your tent is waterproof. The road there has a lot of curves take some car sickness meds with u in case needed. Frogs have a full blown concert at night, I loved it but another member of my groups would have enjoyed a pair of earplugs. Highly recommend!!!

Clearly, it is truly beautiful here. Day use, overnight camping spots & cabin rentals availble. Equipped to accomodate many campers with adequate parking for all who come to visit. They have a variety of trails to walk & hike, bathrooms with token taking showers, boat launch & a beach for lounging. As well the park is pet friendly. Their rates are reasonably priced for overnight stays. Definately worth checking out. Remember, no matter what you choose to do & where you choose to go..... Enjoy yourself! Have some fun!

This charming park boasts not only stunning views of Clean Lake but also a gurgling stream running through it. A well-designed walking path runs along the water, offering breathtaking views along the way. I loved it and look forward to visiting again.
