Cleveland/Cibbets Flat

Overview

Cibbets Flat Campground offers a tranquil retreat for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature. Located within the Cleveland National Forest near Pine Valley, this destination sits at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet, providing a cooler climate than the nearby desert floor. The park is characterized by its rolling hills and a peaceful atmosphere that stands in stark contrast to the busy coastal regions of Southern California.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in the scenic Pine Valley area, the campground is surrounded by a mix of live oaks and manzanita. The landscape is defined by the seasonal flow of Kitchen Creek, which meanders nearby and supports a variety of local wildlife. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a rugged transition zone where high-desert flora meets mountain timber, offering a unique geographic experience just off the Sunrise Scenic Byway.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive camping facility, meaning it is ideal for those who enjoy boondocking or dry camping. While there are no electrical or water hookups, the park provides essential services to keep your stay comfortable:

  • Access to potable water throughout the grounds.
  • Individual sites featuring a fire ring and picnic table.
  • Clean vault toilets located within walking distance of sites.

Due to the narrow access roads and site configurations, it is best suited for smaller RVs and camper vans rather than large rigs. Most sites are shaded, providing relief during warmer afternoons.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the direct access to the Pacific Crest Trail, which is reachable via a short connector path. The area is a haven for hikers and mountain bikers looking to explore the Descanso Ranger District. For those who prefer a scenic drive, the nearby Mount Laguna area offers breathtaking overlooks and additional trailheads, while the clear night skies provide exceptional opportunities for stargazing.

Who This Park Is Best For

Cibbets Flat is the perfect choice for self-contained RVers who prioritize solitude and natural beauty over modern resort luxuries. It appeals most to hikers, bird watchers, and those looking to unplug from digital distractions. If you appreciate a rustic atmosphere and the quiet rustle of oak leaves, this forest service gem offers the peaceful sanctuary you are searching for during your Southern California travels.

went late January and it was cold but fun. very quiet except for running stream. water was mostly shut off so we had to filter from a stream in the morning. only $14 for a single site. great for pct backpackers. we dropped wood via car the day before so we could hike in and stay warm by the fire.

Really laid back campground. Sites are nicely spaced apart and large. Other campers were quiet. My friends and I had 2 sites side by side and there was room for 5 cars. We set up 3 tents, used the fires, and the picnic tables. Pit toilets were as to be expected - decently clean. Running water at the sites. Dog friendly. Roads were nice for bike riding too.

$14 a night. Great for tent, van and small trailer. Level and shades spots. First come first serve. Quiet. Close to San Diego. No power or sewer. Shared water so fill tanks or bring long hose. Gets sunny to charge solar. Along Pacific Crest Trail. Ideal for ebike base camp. New picnic tables, fitepits and restrooms. Great stargazing. No cell service but 5 min drive away to get it. No nearby stores, so don't forget anything.

It was a nice and beautiful place. Green. Cannot swim in the ponds. Not safe! Lots of land for hiking. Beautiful view! $28.00 per night in double spaces. We stay in the middle of the campsite. It was big, but it has a LOT of wasps, but we can manage to enjoy 2 nights.

Great campsite, usually empty depending on the time of year. It’s fun talking to the eclectic groups of people here, or the pct hikers. Some fun off road trails surrounding the area, I’ve gone a few times with some water around. But that’s not often. Everywhere here is usually respectful and cleans up after themselves. It’s awesome to know this is In our backyard. Hope they open it up to be able to take the off road trails to mount laguna.
