Coconino/Pine Flat West

Overview

Pine Flat West offers a serene, high-altitude retreat nestled within the Coconino National Forest just north of Sedona. Unlike the red rock desert floor below, this campground is shaded by a dense canopy of ponderosa pines, providing a much-needed respite from the Arizona sun. This campground serves as a primary hub for those looking to explore the northern reaches of the canyon. Travelers seeking a rustic camping experience will find themselves surrounded by the natural beauty of Oak Creek Canyon, where the air is crisp and the scenery remains lush year-round.

Location & Surroundings

Located roughly twelve miles north of Sedona along the scenic Highway 89A, the park sits deep within the majestic Oak Creek Canyon. The surroundings are defined by towering canyon walls and the nearby flow of Oak Creek, which provides a soothing soundtrack for overnight guests. The drive itself is considered one of the most beautiful in America, featuring hairpin turns and stunning vistas. This location serves as a cool-weather gateway, offering significantly lower temperatures than downtown Sedona, making it a favorite for summer travelers.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, Pine Flat West focuses on preserving the wilderness experience. The park provides vault toilets and drinking water, though it is important to note there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. Most sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 30 feet, and the sites are well-spaced to ensure a sense of privacy and immersion in the forest environment between travelers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts are perfectly positioned to explore the best of Northern Arizona. A short drive south leads to the famous Slide Rock State Park, while the nearby West Fork Trail offers one of the most stunning canyon hikes in the region. Anglers will appreciate the easy access to trout fishing in Oak Creek, which runs parallel to the campground. The area is also a hotspot for birdwatching and photography. For a change of pace, the world-class art galleries and restaurants of Sedona are easily accessible for a quick day trip.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who value peace and natural immersion over modern resort amenities. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of wind through the pines and spending your days hiking or fishing, this park is a perfect fit. It is best suited for mid-sized RVs and camper vans looking for an authentic escape into the rugged landscape of the Coconino National Forest, away from the crowds of the main city center.

Camp sites are scary close to the highway. Literally less than 30 feet off the 89. Loud and spooky especially with kids. Campground host was with us immediately (like followed us to camp) & sounded aggravated and asked what we were doing here then started talking at us about how we are parked incorrectly (IE half the tire was off the ‘pavement’ and in the ‘dirt’ - there is no clear distinction between the two and no signs). The toilets suck all of your excrements toilet paper and soul right out of ya. All of the camp sites are on top of each other being so close to so many folks while trying to relax in nature is tough! Great location for going and doing day trips to flag and Sedona. Not great if you want to listen to nature and not the highway and ppl talking all day & night.

Great location for hiking and sightseeing Sedona. The pit toilets could use updating, but are clean. Fresh water available at Spigots. No electric. No dump station. Campground hosts are great, they keep the sites clean and are responsive to issues. Heavily treed so solar use is limited. Some sites are double sites, which are very crowded. Lots of hiking trails. The hwy is very busy.

Location is beautiful, not ideal for any sort of travel trailer or RV though. Very tight spaces. The host were our least favorite thing about the site. The man and women came over and explained rules in great detail to include no music only in “earbuds” as she was explaining the rules she also asked if anyone was using the grills- as my mom was asking around she held her hand up and said “I’m speaking and on a roll” we would see the man on the golf cart and would wave to him and he never even cracked a smile. They just weren’t friendly people which made the experince and location one we wouldn’t go back to. Also a lot of road noise.

The hosts could have been more professional. The man the night before told us our dogs were loud and annoying, yes he used those exact words. They woke us up in our tent the following morning, I didn’t have a shirt on and was obviously trying to cover up, they didn’t leave. I felt very violated. It seemed like a couple together and the lady immediately had attitude, complaining about our dogs assuming they were fighting and being loud at 2:00am. We were sleeping with the dogs in the tent and they were not being loud at that time, trust me we would have known. The couple then tried to kick us out based on assumption not fact. I told them we were leaving today anyways, I just wanted to sleep and enjoy my morning, I came here to celebrate my birthday and they ruined it for me because they didn’t like our dogs… They then proceeded to hang out near our campsite and the man was menacingly staring at us for probably 10 minutes while we were packing our stuff because we felt unwelcome. Very unprofessional and childlike they could have handled that situation way better. The other host I forgot to get her name, she just moved down here from Colorado, she made us feel very welcome from the moment we got in!

The whole campground smells like horrible dirty never emptied-out restrooms. We had spot 21 and I would recommend NOT to book this site. It is right by the restroom and the smell is the worst, we could not enjoy the outdoors and even in the tent the smell was horrible. The host was super nice and offered for us to change site but we explored and honestly the whole campground was smelling like poop. And the wind wasn’t that strong. Run away from this camp !!!!!
