Colorado Natl Mon/Saddlehorn

Overview

Located within the breathtaking boundaries of the Colorado National Monument, Saddlehorn Campground offers a serene escape high above the Grand Valley. This iconic destination features dramatic red rock formations and steep-walled canyons that create a stunning backdrop for any camping trip. As the only established campground within the monument, it provides an immersive experience in the high desert landscape near Fruita, Colorado, where the silence is only broken by the sound of the wind through the canyons.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated near the Fruita entrance of the monument, perched at an elevation of approximately 6,100 feet. The surroundings are characterized by pinyon-juniper forests and ancient sandstone monoliths that glow during sunset. Visitors enjoy easy access to the Visitor Center, which is within walking distance of many campsites. This location offers slightly cooler temperatures than the valley floor and spectacular panoramic views of the Book Cliffs and the Colorado River in the distance.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic, dry-camping facility that caters to those who appreciate a quiet, natural setting. While there are no hookups for water, electric, or sewer, the campground provides paved pads, flush toilets, and seasonal potable water stations. Each site includes a picnic table and a charcoal grill, though wood fires are generally prohibited to protect the desert environment. It is important to note that many sites can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, though maneuvering larger rigs requires careful attention to specific site lengths.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless exploration along the historic Rim Rock Drive, a 23-mile scenic roadway that winds through the heart of the monument. Hiking trails like the Canyon Rim Trail and Otto’s Trail are accessible directly from the campground area, offering views of famous formations like Independence Monument. Just a short drive away, the town of Fruita is a world-renowned hub for mountain biking and local dining, while the nearby McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area offers further rugged backcountry adventures.

Who This Park Is Best For

Saddlehorn is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for photographers looking to capture the golden hour on red sandstone and travelers seeking a peaceful base for hiking and exploring the high desert. If you enjoy stargazing under dark skies and value direct access to national park service trails, this historic and well-maintained campground is an essential stop on any Colorado road trip.

The campground itself was very nice. Bathrooms relatively clean. Spots were pretty flat and nice. The reason the campground gets 3 stars is because the people who go here are extremely rude and if you’re looking for a quiet time in nature, this is not the place. There was a group of middle aged men blasting music about getting high and drunk that you could hear from the nature trail and multiple loops over for hours. I talked to multiple campers and we all thought maybe the camp host would say something, but they did not. Many people were not following the quiet time restriction. Ended up leaving early because of how obnoxious people were, and saw others move their campsite as well.

Road to the campground is spectacular but a little scary. Camp spots are pretty close together, but the views from B loop are beautiful. Some traffic noise from the town WAY below. We were near a group of very rowdy kids. School trip? But once they were quiet the place was fairly peaceful. Bathrooms are clean!

This campground is definitely different from what we usually go to. It is at a beautiful height with a view of the valley and the surrounding scenery. The sites are quite close and the fire pits are only in prepared charcoal grill stands. However, I found it absolutely beautiful in the Colorado National Monument. The driveway is asphalt, no holes. It has flushing toilets, drinking water, and garbage disposal tables. Amazing hikes to the monuments.

This campground is definitely different from what I’m used to in the high Sierras of California. Spots are pretty close and fires aren’t allowed so no fire pits. However, I thought it was absolutely beautiful. I used it as an overnight stop on a cross-country roadtrip instead of getting a hotel. I have a whole setup in the back of my truck and site 28 was perfect for this. 28 is a longer, pull-through style drive that was pretty level and close to the restrooms.

These campgrounds are nice and have access to running water and restrooms. It is easy to make reservations online. If you do not have a park pass, I would recommend you make those reservations online as well. Also, some spots have more room for tents, so be choose wisely!
