Columbus-Belmont

Overview

Columbus-Belmont State Park is a unique destination in Western Kentucky that blends Civil War history with natural beauty. Perched on a high bluff, it offers a peaceful retreat for RVers who enjoy historical significance alongside modern camping conveniences. The park is famously known as the site of a major Confederate fortification, providing a thoughtful and educational atmosphere for a weekend getaway or a long-distance stop for travelers exploring the river regions.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated directly on the Mississippi River, providing sweeping views of the water from various vantage points. The town of Columbus is small and quiet, allowing visitors to disconnect and enjoy the rolling terrain of the Kentucky Great River Road. Because of its position on the bluffs, the park feels secluded and tranquil, surrounded by mature trees and steep cliffs that offer some of the most dramatic river overlooks in the state.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 38 RV sites that cater to trailers and motorhomes with water and electric hookups. Guests have access to a central dump station and a modern bathhouse with clean showers and laundry facilities. For leisure, the park includes a playground for children and several well-kept picnic areas. While the sites offer a traditional state park feel, they are well-maintained and provide the essential comforts needed for a relaxing stay in a natural setting.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

History buffs will appreciate the on-site Civil War museum, housed in an 1850s farmhouse, and the massive anchor used to chain the river during the war. Hikers can explore the 2.5-mile loop trail that winds through original Confederate earthworks and offers stunning river vistas. For those willing to drive, the nearby Wickliffe Mounds Research Center offers a look into prehistoric Native American cultures, making the area a true hub for historical exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for history enthusiasts and travelers seeking a quiet, scenic environment rather than a high-traffic resort. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for an educational camping experience or nature lovers who want to watch river traffic and wildlife from the bluffs. If you prefer bird watching and peaceful sunsets over the water, this historic Kentucky park will suit your travel style perfectly.

Beautiful campground with historic sites right there as well. We loved walking around and visiting the museum so close to our site. This is one of our new favorite campgrounds. They have blacktop for RVs and full hookups and nice grass spots for tents with fire pits and picnic tables. Warm showers and clean bathrooms plus laundry! Playgrounds for kids to play at. Most importantly the staff of the park and camping hosts were AMAZING!! So incredibly kind and helpful.

We had a wonderful time camping. The people were friendly. The grounds were gorgeous and well kept. The shower house was air conditioned and clean. The museum was educational and hosted. The small town of Columbus was welcoming. We enjoyed visiting Jen’s Place and the Beards & Roses General Store. We definitely hope to go back in the future!
