Daniel Boone/Koomer Ridge

Overview

Koomer Ridge Campground serves as a premier destination for travelers seeking an authentic connection with the Daniel Boone National Forest. Located in the heart of the Red River Gorge area, this campground offers a serene, rustic environment that prioritizes the natural landscape over modern luxuries. As the only developed campground within this specific geological area, it provides a unique opportunity to stay amidst ancient sandstone cliffs and dense hardwood forests. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate a quiet, semi-primitive experience while exploring the rugged beauty of Kentucky.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Pine Ridge, KY, the park is perfectly positioned for visitors to explore the Red River Gorge Geological Area. The surrounding terrain is characterized by spectacular rock arches, jagged cliffs, and deep, lush ravines. The park sits high on a ridge, offering a cooling canopy of trees and immediate access to some of the most famous hiking trails in the region. The proximity to the Clifty Wilderness ensures that the environment remains pristine, providing a peaceful backdrop for your RV stay.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed for dry camping, meaning there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. However, the facility provides essential comforts to ensure a pleasant stay:

  • Modern bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers.
  • Central dump station and drinking water fill-up points for RVers.
  • Spacious sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings.

While the sites vary in size, many can accommodate small to mid-sized rigs up to 35 feet in length, though navigating the wooded loops requires a careful hand.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is just steps away from your campsite. Multiple trails, such as the Koomer Ridge Trail and the Hidden Springs Trail, begin right within the park boundaries. Just a short drive away, you can visit the iconic Natural Bridge State Resort Park or challenge yourself with world-class rock climbing on the surrounding sandstone cliffs. Photography enthusiasts will find endless inspiration at various overlooks, while birdwatchers can spot numerous native species throughout the dense forest canopy.

Who This Park Is Best For

Koomer Ridge is best suited for nature enthusiasts and hikers who prefer a traditional camping atmosphere. Because there are no hookups, it is ideal for RVers who are self-contained or those looking to practice their boondocking skills in a managed setting. It is a perfect choice for smaller RV setups and camper vans that can navigate the winding forest roads. If you value direct trail access and a genuine forest experience over resort-style amenities, this park will be the highlight of your Kentucky travels.

We reserved a space to camp at this campground and were very pleased with our stay. The site was very clean with a level small gravel pad that can accommodate multiple tents. Each area had a large picnic bench to utilize as well as a very functional fire pit that comes equipped with a grate that you can use for cooking. Trash and bathrooms were easily accessible. The main bathroom area has showers and the area was very clean. I would highly recommend staying here.

I love Koomer Ridge. Always quiet and shaded spots for camping. Made for tent camping, but many pull campers and set up. Fortunately, I've never experienced a generator. Camp hosts are always friendly and have ice and wood.

Awesome campground. The gravel beds are a little rough/uncomfy for tent camping. The bathhouse was super clean and within quick walking distance of campsites.

Spacious, wooded campsites with a pretty decent bathhouse. BUT--bring your own water. It's a total crapshoot as to whether there will be potable water available at the spickets scattered throughout the campsite. We camped Memorial Day weekend, and the water came out yellow, no matter how long we let it run. We stopped by last weekend (Labor Day) and checked the water before committing to a campsite: nothing came out. The water was shut off. Glad we checked before paying for a campsite. (Found a great site at Land of the Arches instead.)

Only mentioning because a few negative reviews mention the bathhouse. . .called ahead to make sure bathhouse was open. Forest service called back and assured they were. Clean and in nice condition. I stayed in the middle of the week. The campsite was quiet and peaceful. campsite was nice and the campgrounds were located in close proximity to areas of interest. I am very happy that I stayed at Koomer Ridge.
