David Thompson Resort
Overview
Located along the scenic David Thompson Highway, the David Thompson Resort serves as a rustic mountain gateway in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Unlike the more commercialized hubs found in Banff or Jasper, this resort offers a grounded experience for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the unspoiled wilderness of West-Central Alberta. It provides a reliable and full-service basecamp for those traversing the spectacular corridor between Nordegg and the world-renowned Icefields Parkway.
Location & Surroundings
The resort is situated in the Cline River area, overlooking the stunning turquoise waters of Abraham Lake, Alberta's largest man-made reservoir. This region is characterized by dramatic limestone peaks, dense evergreen forests, and expansive valley views. Because it lies just outside the official national park boundaries, the area offers a quieter, more rugged atmosphere while still providing easy access to the Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve, known for its unique flora and historical significance.
Amenities & Park Features
Travelers will find various camping options, including full-service RV sites equipped with power, water, and sewer connections. The property functions as a self-contained village, featuring a fully stocked general store and a gas station, which are essential resources in this remote stretch of highway. On-site facilities include a licensed restaurant, laundry services, and a play area and mini-golf course for family entertainment. The resort also maintains a classic mountain chapel and clean shower facilities to ensure a comfortable stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure is just steps away from your campsite, with the nearby Siffleur Falls Trail offering a breathtaking hike to powerful cascades. During the summer months, the wind-swept Abraham Lake is popular for kayaking and fishing, while the winter season brings photographers from around the world to witness the famous frozen methane bubbles trapped beneath the ice. For a truly unique perspective, guests can book mountain helicopter tours locally to see the surrounding glaciers and high-alpine peaks from above.
Who This Park Is Best For
This resort is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers who prioritize direct access to hiking and nature over urban luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for RV families looking for a multi-day base to explore David Thompson Country without the heavy congestion of national park crowds. If you enjoy a mix of self-sufficiency and basic resort conveniences while surrounded by a wild mountain setting, this park provides the perfect balance for your next Alberta road trip adventure.

I had an amazing stay at this resort and would definitely give it five stars! The food was delicious, especially their signature dishes. The hotel rooms were very clean, spacious, and comfortable. The property is huge, with a hotel, cabins, and camping areas. The best part is the location—right behind the hotel is Abraham Lake, famous for its beautiful views. Every morning, we enjoyed breakfast with stunning scenery, and in the afternoons, we walked along the lakeshore surrounded by nature. We were also lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at night—it was absolutely breathtaking! I’m extremely satisfied with this resort and will definitely come back next year.

Ten day stay in the camp ground. Bathrooms and showers were disgustingly dirty. Out houses were full and never cleaned. Garbage bins were overflowing when we arrived and we could smell them from our campsite. Complained, showers were cleaner the next day and two days after that they were filthy again. Poor water pressure, so bad we could not shower in our RV. Would not go back, very run down. Positive note beautiful location.

The owners have done little to maintain the site - from the bare-bones and funky smelling rooms, the derelict playground, and the sad excuse for a mini-golf course, while guests pay anywhere from $209 to $365. This is clearly all about the cash grab and not about the guest experience. This place could be amazing - perhaps use the constructive feedback on this review site to do better.

We just had dinner at the restaurant and we were so happy with the brisket! So tender and taste. My boyfriend had the pulled pork sandwich and was very happy with his meal. He said there was a huge serving of pulled pork and very taste. Definitely will be back!

A truly mountain experience with gorgeous mountain views! The rooms are clean and comfortable. The food in the restaurant is delicious. We had pulled pork sandwiches and Cole slaw. And both were super delicious! I also had sweet potato fries and loved them as well.
