Demotte Campground
Overview
Demotte Campground is a serene, high-altitude destination nestled within the Kaibab National Forest near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Unlike commercial RV resorts, this site offers a rustic, forested experience that emphasizes solitude and immersion in nature. It is a dry camping facility, meaning you will not find traditional RV hookups here. Instead, you are treated to large, shaded campsites surrounded by towering ponderosa pines and vibrant wildflower meadows, perfect for those who truly want to disconnect.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in northern Arizona, the campground serves as a primary gateway for travelers heading toward the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Its location at an elevation of roughly 8,700 feet provides a welcome escape from the heat of the lower deserts during the summer months. The surrounding landscape consists of dense forests and rolling terrain, offering a quiet, cool climate that makes it an ideal stopover for nature enthusiasts exploring the high plateau region.
Amenities & Park Features
Because the campground is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the amenities are designed to support a primitive camping environment. Each site features a fire ring, grill, and picnic table, which are essential for enjoying meals under the stars. While there are no electrical or water hookups, vault toilets and potable water spigots are provided. The sites are generally well-spaced, offering enough room for mid-sized RVs and trailers to park comfortably in the tall timber.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of Demotte Campground is its proximity to the Grand Canyon North Rim, located just a short drive to the south. Visitors often spend their days hiking the scenic trails that line the canyon rim or photographing the iconic vistas of Bright Angel Point. In addition to the canyon, the forest is crisscrossed with miles of hiking and biking trails that allow for wildlife viewing, including the famous Kaibab squirrel and local mule deer populations.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is perfect for off-grid enthusiasts and those who prefer a natural, quiet camping experience over resort-style amenities. It is an excellent choice for travelers visiting the North Rim who want to stay close to the park entrance without the crowds of a developed RV park. If you enjoy boondocking in the woods, waking up to crisp mountain air, and having direct access to forest trails, this site will feel like home.

This is a most excellent place. Tent camping and the site was wonderful. There is a small store just down on the main road. We were there in July 2022 and were thankful for a spot outside the NP. The night before we had stayed in Bryce and I had made a mistake on the paper work for my campsite and Ranger Dan railed on me!! (I think he was having a bad day, but it didn't make my day any better either!) The camp hosts here were friendly, helpful people. I'm sorry to hear about the fires. I'm assuming the campground is gone now. I would have loved to spend more time here.

We were fortunate to land a camp site when we were visiting the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Private sites & very quiet. Firewood is available for purchase at the camp host's site (who was very friendly & helpful). Very convenient to the NP entrance!

We did the first come, first serve site and managed to snag site 1 We carefully fit our 35' camper into it--just no shade and it was July. The staff was really helpful and nice. With your America the beautiful park pass you can park for $15/night.

Wow, did we ever get lucky! We were trying to get there early for FF sites and ended up with a FABULOUS, SPACIOUS pull through, site 7. Dry camping but potable water spigots for water jugs if needed. First of the season so the vault toilets were immaculate. This place was wonderful. Great hosts greeted us. Its like... 5 minutes to the GCNP entrance, gas station (very expensive gas) across the road if needed... which we did.. yikes. Gorgeous setting, dark skies.. probably could have seen a lot more stars if it didn't SNOW 6 inches overnight.

We had a nice 3-night stay here while visiting the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Lucky for us - we weren't able to book a reservation at the Grand Canyon Campground (spaces booked ahead of us) but as it turned out, the campground delayed its opening due to heavy snowfall this past winter. We would have been cancelled and out of luck! We checked into DeMotte on the first day it was open and the first day the Grand Canyon Park was open. Our site was a long pull-through complete with firepit and picnic table. Very dark skies at night. Lovely! This is dry camping with water available for filling jugs, but not your RV and no dump station. Pit toilets. No cell service here. There is at the park near the Visitor Center and Lodge. Gas station across the road has a few groceries as well as propane.
