Denali/Denali Viewpoint North
Overview
Denali Viewpoint North offers one of the most stunning roadside perspectives of North America’s tallest peak. Located within the expansive Denali State Park, this site provides a scenic campground experience that prioritizes natural beauty over modern luxuries. It serves as an essential stop for travelers navigating the Parks Highway, offering a peaceful environment to appreciate the vast Alaskan wilderness and the rugged mountain peaks that define the region. For those traveling through the interior, this stop serves as a serene alternative to the busier corridors.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at Mile 162.7 of the George Parks Highway in Trapper Creek, the park is nestled in a lush, forested area. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the Alaska Range, with the Susitna River valley stretching out below. On clear days, the sheer scale of Denali is overwhelming, making the location a premier destination for landscape photography and quiet reflection away from more crowded tourist hubs. The park is conveniently positioned between Anchorage and Fairbanks, making it a perfect midway rest point.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state park facility, the amenities are functional and rustic. The park features paved parking pads suitable for various RV sizes, though there are no utility hookups available. Visitors can utilize the following features during their stay:
- Clean and accessible vault toilets.
- Potable water available via hand pumps.
- Individual picnic tables and fire rings at designated sites.
Interpretive displays provide historical and geological context regarding the mountains, while well-maintained walking paths lead directly to the primary viewing platform for unobstructed vistas.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore within a short drive. The Alaska Veterans Memorial is located nearby, offering a somber and beautiful tribute with panoramic views. For those seeking adventure, the Byers Lake area offers kayaking and fishing, while the extensive K'esugi Ridge trail system provides world-class hiking opportunities with continuous views of the mountain range. Wildlife viewing is also a popular activity, as moose and bears are frequently spotted in the dense surrounding brush.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who value solitude and scenery over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for photographers, nature lovers, and those embarking on an Alaskan road trip who want a front-row seat to the mountain. If you prefer a quiet, primitive camping style and have the capacity to dry camp, this viewpoint provides an unforgettable overnight experience. It is particularly well-suited for those who want to avoid the crowds found deeper within the national park boundaries.

A parking space and nothing more but Magnificent views! Make the stop here and you won't be disappointed....unless it is cloudy, raining or snowing ..then maybe not a lot to see.

Just about the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Worth the drive!

The access is not plowed in winter, but still nice view of the Alaska Range from the highway.

The northern viewpoint for Denali - it has more space for parking and overnight camping but a slightly less good view of the mountain as the peak stands out less. Definitely worth stopping if you are planning to head all the way through the pass up to Fairbanks but if you’re just travelling up from Anchorage for the view then the south view point is all you need.
