Deschutes/Metolius River Basin Campgrounds
Overview
The campgrounds within the Deschutes/Metolius River Basin offer a serene escape into one of Oregon's most cherished natural landscapes. Located near the community of Camp Sherman, these sites provide a traditional forest camping experience centered around the cold, spring-fed waters of the Metolius River. RVers will find a collection of smaller, well-maintained campgrounds that prioritize a deep connection with nature over modern digital distractions. It is a place where the scent of ponderosa pines and the sound of rushing water define the stay.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled at the base of Black Butte, this basin is famous for its dramatic river views and lush forest canopy. The Metolius River emerges fully formed from a hillside and winds through the basin, maintaining a constant temperature year-round. These campgrounds are situated within the Deschutes National Forest, offering a secluded atmosphere while remaining accessible via paved forest roads. The surrounding area is characterized by towering old-growth trees and a diverse ecosystem that supports a wide variety of local wildlife.
Amenities & Park Features
While these campgrounds lean toward a rustic experience, they provide the essentials for self-contained RV travel. Most sites include sturdy picnic tables and designated fire rings for evening gatherings. While full hookups are generally unavailable in the basin's forest service sites, several campgrounds offer access to potable water and vault toilets. The sites are often spaced generously to ensure privacy, though larger rigs should check specific site lengths. Many locations feature direct river access points, making it easy to enjoy the waterfront from your campsite.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the river itself, which is a world-renowned destination for fly fishing and river photography. Visitors can explore the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery or hike the Metolius River Trail, which offers miles of level walking paths with stunning vistas. For a more challenging adventure, the Black Butte Lookout trail provides panoramic views of the Cascade Range. The historic Camp Sherman Store serves as a local hub, offering basic supplies, fishing gear, and a glimpse into the area's rich heritage.
Who This Park Is Best For
This area is ideal for RVers who enjoy dry camping and solitude rather than a resort-style atmosphere. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in angling, birdwatching, or hiking. Travelers with smaller trailers or camper vans will find the winding forest roads and intimate sites perfectly suited to their setup. If you are looking to unplug from technology and immerse yourself in a pristine riverside environment, the Metolius River Basin is an unmatched Oregon destination.

Wonderful hospitality, Nice and clean bathrooms. Salina was just super friendly and helpful, always with a smile. A very nice family place. Lots of hiking trails and great mexican restaurant within walking distance. Highly recommend!

First time camping so late in the year, and aside from being cold it was great. Very few other campers. A little concerned letting the dog in the water because of decomposing fish, again just late in the year and after spawning.

It is walk in tent only site. It only needs to walk 2 minutes so you don't need to worry too much. Site is quiet and woods , river around. It is closer to black Butte trail and other mountains or trails. It is a great place.

Two vault toilets, very calm and quiet place to camp. Fly fishing only on the river. Try to get there early- this place fills up fast! And the other two camp grounds ahead are closed for the season! Also the water is shut off for the season already too.
