Deschutes River State Rec Area

Overview

Deschutes River State Recreation Area serves as a scenic gateway where the Deschutes River converges with the mighty Columbia. This park offers a rugged, high-desert atmosphere characterized by canyon walls and riverside trails. It is a popular destination for those seeking a heritage-rich outdoor experience without the noise of more developed urban parks. Whether you are stopping for a night while traveling through the gorge or settling in for a fishing trip, the park provides a peaceful connection to Oregon’s natural history.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Wasco, Oregon, the park sits at the mouth of the Deschutes River. The landscape is defined by dramatic basalt cliffs and rolling hills that turn golden in the summer heat. Because it is located within the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, visitors often enjoy drier weather than the western side of the state. The park is conveniently located off Highway 30, making it an accessible point for those exploring the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a dedicated RV loop with electrical and water hookups, accommodating various rig sizes. While it maintains a rustic feel, guests have access to modern comforts including flush toilets and hot showers located within the campground loops. A central dump station is available for convenience. Many sites are shaded by large trees, which offer a welcome reprieve from the intense sun often found in this high-desert environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, specifically world-class steelhead fishing and fly fishing. Hikers and mountain bikers can explore miles of trails, including the relatively flat path along the old railroad grade. Just a short drive away, you can visit the Maryhill Museum of Art or the nearby Stonehenge Memorial. The area is also a hub for rafting and kayaking, with many rafters using the park as a takeout point after navigating the lower Deschutes.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation area is ideal for active outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy fishing, hiking, and watersports. It appeals to RVers who prefer a natural setting over a luxury resort environment. If you appreciate stunning canyon sunsets and the sound of a rushing river, you will find this park perfectly suited to your needs. It is also an excellent choice for history buffs looking to explore the trails once walked by early pioneers.

This is a nice state park along the banks of the Deschutes River. Loop A is for RV camping and has water and electric available. No hookup for sewer. Nice shaded spots and paved. Two other areas are tent and RV dry camping. These are grassy sites with fire rings and picnic tables. Restrooms in loop A Ihave toilet and running water but no showers. They definitely need to be cleaned more regularly. Other areas have pit toilets for men and women. Campground is in a nice location, although there are frequent trains and they do blow their horns as they pass by. Quite loud but you could sleep through them if you try. Highway noises minimal although the interstate is fairly close.

Great camping along the Deschutes. Good swimming. Good fishing. Good mountain biking. Bonus: best camp host in the business (plus camp host dog)!

Beautiful park! Bathrooms are clean. Rangers are around a lot and are so friendly and helpful. Great hiking loops, although trails are not well maintained. Ice is available on-site, $3 per bag. Watch out for rattlesnakes and ticks, we saw both during our stay.
