Desoto Fort Payne is a city in DeKalb County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Fort Payne, Alabama Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,912 at the 2010 census, down from 5,232 at the 2000 census. It is named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. The city is located in the foothills of Lookout Mountain and is home to Little River Canyon National Preserve. Desoto Fort Payne is known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting. The city is also home to several historic sites, including the Desoto State Park and the DeSoto Caverns.

We had a very awesome stay here at the park. We stayed in cabin 8 and absolutely loved it here. The park is so pretty and peaceful and there was so much to do. There were so many fun trails and we especially loved the boardwalk trail. That was an awesome feature and so pretty. There were so many massive rocks to explore and up the road was desoto falls. The pool was very nice and I’m so glad it was included. That’s pretty much a requirement for us staying at parks is there must be a place to swim and through your GA and TN where we usually are, they don’t care much for keeping any pools open. The lodge looked very comfy and peaceful and I would definitely stay there next time. We were all very sad to leave this park.

I can not begin to tell you how much fun I had here. We camped at the RV location and right behind the campsite was a momma bear and her three cubs. They lived there. Saw them the whole weekend. The waterfall that is a .7 mile hike took 22 minutes, it's rough terrain and has a decent hill to climb but absolutely worth the walk for the waterfall swimming hole. We also went to the waterfall 8 miles away and walked about 30 seconds before getting to a beautiful waterfall that had an awesome swimming area.

Great state park, lots of waterfalls in the area. Campground has  spacious sites. Mountain bike trails are on the very difficult scale. Except for the chalet trail and Gilliam loop. I enjoyed the technical trails, some trees were down , but a good ride.

Great place to stay. Bed was comfortable and all the amenities you need for a cabin in the woods. Only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is the floors were extremely dirty.  Nice LVP flooring but not mopped.

Great place here in northeast Alabama. One of the many beautiful hidden gems Alabama has to offer.
This state park is very well managed and maintained. Very clean bathrooms. Lots of picnic areas with tables and charcoal grills. So much to see and do here. Hiking trails all over the place. The falls has a swim area with beach for the kids and family with a picnic area right next to it in view of the falls and dam. Also has bathrooms walking distance to the falls and beach/picnic area. It is a $5 dollar per car load all day fee area which is well worth it. Please help us keep Alabama clean when you visit.

This is an awesome area to visit and the State Park has very nice amenities. The campground is comparable to some private parks we have stayed in for a lot higher rates. We definitely recommend visiting here for hiking and sightseeing in the area.

Quick walk from the parking lot to the falls viewing area down a flight of cement steps. At the landing you can walk out on top of the falls and you can walk to the end of the railing along the cliff and see the full length of the falls. A dam right above the falls forms a lake in front of the parking lot. Nice peaceful area. Restrooms there and a they are building an attached gift shop and heating the whole thing so it can be used on a more year round basis instead of shutting the water down during the winter. Worth a stop if you are nearby.

My cousin and I spent 3 days at the state park primitive campground. It was so quiet and peaceful. The entire park was well appointed. The hiking paths were clear and easily accessible.

DeSoto State Park is truly a gem! Conveniently located just eight miles northeast of Fort Payne, Alabama, it’s nestled atop the breathtaking Lookout Mountain. The park is surrounded by rushing waterfalls, peaceful trails, and the sweet fragrance of wildflowers that will absolutely take your breath away.

The cabins are gorgeous — so well maintained and beautifully kept! The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the trails, always ready to help and share great tips. And the restaurant… Wow! The food is absolutely amazing, full of flavor, and served with such warm hospitality.

From the peace and tranquility of nature to the soothing sound of the waterfalls, this place is pure healing for the soul. I didn’t want to leave! I can’t wait to come back and experience this slice of paradise again. 🌿💧✨

Lots and lots of stuff to do with just the campground! Including the DeSoto falls.

The only negative thing was the roads in and out we're so dangerously steep. But if you can make the climb, then it's definitely worth this stay!

Can't say enough good things about this park. Great sites. Pretty private. Super clean. Peaceful. Lots of trails. The waterfall is close. Fort Payne is also close, and a cute little town.

First time visiting here, and it is such an amazing place. We live two hours away, so it's not a bad drive. There are plenty of things to do with family, and they even have a nice playground for the kids. The falls were awesome and easy to get to. We also ate breakfast at the lodge, which was very good. All of the staff at the park are very friendly and do a great job.

Christmas camping was the best! We dos most of the trails amid camped 6 nights at the campground. Was absolutely beautiful but super cold forest couple days but we had warm clothes and were able to explore and see some awesome views and waterfalls. The store is great to grab a soda or stop at bathroom coming or going to hiking trails. Camping was great but I think arriving Christmas Day and the super cold weather kept people away so it was pretty empty. That being said I can’t imagine how busy and crowded it would be over spring and summer breaks. But definitely a great memory maker it was for Christmas 2024!
