Douglas Tailwater Campground
Overview
Douglas Tailwater Campground offers a peaceful retreat managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Situated directly beneath the towering Douglas Dam, this campground provides a scenic backdrop where the French Broad River begins its journey. It is a well-regarded destination for travelers seeking a natural setting that prioritizes water access and quiet evenings over commercial resort flash. The atmosphere here is centered on the natural beauty of East Tennessee, making it a favorite for those who appreciate the sight of mist rising off the river at sunrise.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Kodak, TN, the park sits in a unique geographic position between the Great Smoky Mountains and the bustling tourist hubs of the region. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the French Broad River and the impressive concrete structure of the dam itself. While the area feels secluded and rustic, it remains conveniently close to major travel routes. The proximity to Douglas Lake provides a contrasting environment of expansive open water just on the other side of the dam, offering diverse terrains for exploration within a short drive.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides practical facilities that cater well to self-contained RVers. Most sites feature water and electric hookups, with a convenient dump station located on-site for guest use. The grounds include a restroom and shower facility, allowing for a comfortable stay in a rugged environment. For recreation, the park boasts a boat ramp and a dedicated fishing pier, which are essential for those looking to take advantage of the river. Families often enjoy the on-site playground and the well-maintained picnic areas scattered throughout the property.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers will find this location exceptional, as the cold water released from the dam creates a prime habitat for trout and bass fishing. Beyond the river, visitors are only a short drive from the excitement of Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, where attractions like Dollywood and various dinner theaters await. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers endless hiking trails and scenic overlooks within reach. History buffs might also enjoy visiting the nearby historic town of Dandridge, which offers a charming glimpse into the state's past.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for avid anglers and birdwatchers who want to wake up steps away from the water. It appeals to RVers who prefer a simple, nature-focused experience over the amenities of a high-end luxury resort. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of moving water and value proximity to the Smokies without staying in the middle of the tourist traffic, this campground is a perfect fit. It is best suited for those traveling in trailers or motorhomes looking for a peaceful, budget-friendly riverside stay.

Douglas Tailwater is, without question, the best campground I have ever visited. This location fully deserves its 5-star rating, providing an experience that seamlessly blends tranquility, spectacular nature, and excellent service. The atmosphere here is absolutely perfect. The park is wonderfully quiet and peaceful, and being parked right beside the river provided a visually stunning and relaxing backdrop for our entire stay. The wildlife sightings were the highlight of the trip: we were treated to a spectacular, unforgettable show when a bald eagle swooped down and successfully caught a fish—not just once, but twice! Beyond the natural setting, the campground is exceptionally well-managed. The grounds are impeccably maintained, showing that the staff truly cares about the environment. Furthermore, every staff member we interacted with was helpful and genuinely friendly, ensuring our stay was smooth and welcoming. If you are looking for a relaxing, beautiful escape with professional service, Douglas Tailwater is the only choice.

This campsite is beautiful and clean. In all honesty would be a 5 star review, but the owner is exceptionally unprofessional. It is one thing to enforce site rules; it is another to curse out a paying customer for accidental

Had a hard time at this place. Only stayed 4 hours the first night and none the second night. No refund given for second night. There was a razor blade right on the ground. Glad my kid was older. The ground was too hard to even get the tent up. Wouldn’t give me the site I wanted on the website even though no one was there. Was only 2 over. That would have gave us more space. Keeping my money is kind of scammy since we didn’t stay there

Very nice campground, gravel, river front, shaded, level sites, peaceful and quiet, enjoyed bird watching. Front desk people were the sweetest and most accommodating. Best to call to reserve a spot instead of booking online. We loved staying there and hope to be back soon! Can’t beat the price!

This campground is off the river downstream from the Douglas dam. The water is up during the day and lowers at night. A quiet camping experience with minimal sites. The restrooms are clean and well taken care of. The staff are kind and helpful. Only down side is the bridge traffic.
