Duck Mountain/Childs Lake Campground
Overview
Childs Lake Campground is a premier destination within the beautiful Duck Mountain Provincial Park, offering a serene escape into Manitoba’s lush boreal forest. Located near Shortdale, this campground is widely recognized for its high elevation and deep, clear waters. It provides a peaceful setting where RV travelers can reconnect with nature while enjoying the unique geography of the Rolling River Upland. The park’s tranquil environment makes it one of the most sought-after wilderness retreats in the region.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated in the western portion of Duck Mountain, surrounded by a landscape defined by rolling hills and sparkling lakes. Unlike the flatter prairies typically associated with the province, this area offers a rugged terrain that feels remarkably like northern Ontario. The lake itself is spring-fed, resulting in incredible water clarity that makes it a standout feature of the Shortdale region. The surrounding timber provides a dense canopy, offering plenty of shade and privacy for those staying in the park.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground caters well to RVers with a variety of electrical sites designed to accommodate different rig sizes. Visitors have access to essential facilities that make a wilderness stay more comfortable:
- Modern washrooms and coin-operated showers for guest convenience.
- A convenient boat launch and nearby fish cleaning stations.
- Generous fire pits at every site with firewood available for purchase.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw at Duck Mountain, with world-class fishing for lake trout and walleye right at your doorstep. Hikers can explore the nearby trails or take a short drive to Baldy Mountain, the highest point in Manitoba, which offers an observation tower with panoramic views. The crystal-clear beach at Childs Lake is perfect for swimming and sunbathing during the warm summer months, while the Blueberry Hill trail offers a moderately challenging hike through diverse local flora.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for nature photographers and anglers who appreciate a quiet, wilderness-oriented atmosphere over a busy commercial resort vibe. It is a fantastic choice for families who enjoy self-contained RV camping and want to spend their days hiking, boating, or wildlife spotting. If you are seeking a rugged provincial park experience that offers reliable amenities and access to some of the cleanest water in the province, this is the perfect Manitoba destination.

It’s best yurt view on the lake in Manitoba

A wonderful experience. We were there for 3 nights in the first week of July 2025. We had absolutely no service on our phones about 15 outside of the park, which we were kind of excited about to be totally honest. We were surprised that we had to pay for showers, I think it was $1 for 3 minutes, which feels a bit steep to me. Firewood was also only for purchase, which if you show up after the lodge closes like we did, you’re kind of screwed to make food or heat up anything that night. That was also a bit surprising and a tad frustrating, but perhaps we didn’t do our proper research before we went. Other than those two “surprises”, we truly had a great time! The park is beautiful, the water so clear near the shore, and lots of paths to walk around our campsite. Plenty of wildlife to watch, and the campsites feel separated enough, depends on the site you got of course. The lodge has lots of extras that you may have forgotten for sale, lots of food items that are just camping classics. Although, be warned those items are quite pricy so just don’t forget anything. 😂 For the time of year we went, the horse flies were HORRIBLE. But they took shifts with the mosquitoes, so we could get a break from them for a bit in the afternoon. 😂 but what do you except in “northern” MB in the marshy area?? Definitely bring a fly swatter. Lots of camping sights, but they go fast! It’s worth it if you don’t mind really living off the grid.

Beautiful secluded campground with little to no cell phone reception, lots of gorgeous lakes, trails and wildlife nearby. Our spot had a small trail leading straight to the lake through the trees. A gorgeous place to spend a few days!

Love it here! There is almost always deer in and around camping area calmy walking around. Lots of hiking and trails to adventure on and soo many lakes nearby to visit. About the only concern is the bugs.. you are in the north and trees, they are plenty and big. Be prepared with repellant and such.

The park and yurts are perfect and I highly recommend the campground. I also like how clear was the water. The only downside was the internet or even mobile access that is not available except for close to handsoap in men washroom.
