Durham Conservation Area

Overview

The Durham Conservation Area offers a peaceful retreat nestled within the scenic landscapes of West Grey. Spanning approximately 160 acres, this park is managed by Saugeen Conservation and provides a welcoming environment for RVers looking to reconnect with nature. Visitors often praise the park for its towering trees and its prime position along the banks of the Saugeen River, creating a tranquil atmosphere for a weekend getaway or an extended stay in Southwestern Ontario.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of the town of Durham, ON, the park enjoys a convenient balance of seclusion and accessibility. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills and lush forests, with the Saugeen River serving as the focal point of the landscape. Because it is located near Highway 6, travelers find it easy to access while feeling worlds away from the city. The proximity to the historic town of Durham ensures that campers are never too far from local shops and services.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to various camping styles with over 200 campsites. For RV travelers, the park provides several essential features to ensure a functional and comfortable stay:

  • Sites equipped with 15 or 30-amp electrical service
  • A convenient on-site dumping station for waste management
  • Access to clean washroom facilities and hot showers

The large, forested lots provide a level of privacy that is often missing from modern commercial RV resorts, while the onsite playground serves as a great hub for younger campers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities to fill their days. The Saugeen River is renowned for its superb trout and salmon fishing, as well as excellent conditions for canoeing and kayaking. Within the park, hikers can explore over seven kilometers of trails that wind through cedar forests and meadows. Just a short walk or drive away, visitors can marvel at the scenic McGowan Falls, a popular local landmark known for its natural beauty and photography opportunities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for RVers who prioritize a rustic, nature-focused experience over high-end resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for active families and anglers who want direct access to one of Ontario's premier river systems. Overall, it was a beautiful conservation. If the main showers were updated, I would have given it a 5 star. The river is perfect for young kids. The speed of a lazy river. You can stand up in it. Perfect for a tube just to float down. The 1 st beach is very nice, but if you walk/drive down 1km further, the next beach is even better for young kids. We had a family reunion in the group camping area. The staff were great to us. Would definitely recommend it.

This campground is poorly maintained. The roads are narrow and sites are difficult to get into without encroaching on someone else's site. The water and electric connections are hidden in the overgrown bushes and trees. Grass has not been cut for some time. We camped here in a 24 ft class C. Definitely will not return to this location.

Campsites are either tree enclosed or no trees anywhere. Sites with power and water are nice. You have to buy their wood for $10.00/bag only lasted one night! Staff are friendly, lots for teens and young ones to do, ie. Basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, swimming but beach is a car drive away.

Includes McGowan falls. I dunno if I got confused or whatever; it seemed like it was just dam that was a few metres tall. Has a few picnic tables, a river with rocks that you can throw into, a washroom with soap and paper, swings, a slide, and inoffensive scenery. If you add a few filters and the right time of day, I’m sure you could scrounge up something Instagram worthy. Well, it’s nice, too, to have a place that isn’t too popular. Good enough for a few minutes’ stroll, or a casual afternoon lunch.
