Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point/General Creek

Overview

Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park offers a serene escape on the forested shores of Lake Tahoe. The General Creek Campground within the park provides a classic outdoor experience amidst towering trees and crisp mountain air. This park is unique for offering year-round camping, making it a favorite destination for both summer hikers and winter sports enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the Sierras while staying at one of the region's most pristine and naturally preserved state parks.

Location & Surroundings

Located on the scenic West Shore near Tahoe City, the park encompasses nearly 2,000 acres of mountain wilderness. The landscape is dominated by massive sugar pines, incense cedars, and white firs that create a dense canopy. Unlike the busier tourist hubs of the south shore, this area provides a quiet and secluded feel. The campground is situated on the inland side of Highway 89, with the shores of Lake Tahoe just a short walk or bike ride away through beautiful forested paths.

Amenities & Park Features

General Creek Campground is designed for a rustic and authentic stay, featuring paved parking pads that accommodate RVs and trailers. While there are no utility hookups, the park provides essential facilities including centralized restrooms with flush toilets and seasonal showers. Each individual site is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a bear-resistant food locker. A sanitary dump station and water filling stations are available on-site, ensuring that self-contained RVers have the basic necessities for a comfortable stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park is home to the historic Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, a stunning example of a grand Tahoe summer home from the early 1900s. Nature lovers can explore miles of trails, including the General Creek Trail which is popular for both hiking and biking. During the winter months, the park is famous for its groomed cross-country ski trails that were used during the 1960 Olympics. The lakeside portion of the park features swimming beaches and a pier, perfect for enjoying the crystal-clear water.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and RVers who prefer a quiet, wooded environment over a high-density commercial resort. It is perfect for those with smaller to mid-sized RVs looking to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada. Travelers seeking a traditional state park experience with easy access to both historic landmarks and waterfront recreation will find this to be an exceptional home base for their Tahoe adventure.

Wonderful state park with lots of picnic areas and beach to walk. Huge evergreens to enjoy. There is a 120 year old mansion to tour if time allows. We had planned to just stop for an hour or so but stayed longer as it was such a beautiful place.

Really beautiful state park with a beautiful trail called the Dolder Nature Trail which we walked very leisurely over a couple hours. It brings you out to a gorgeous and serene beach. The bathrooms were very clean although there were no soap dispensers and thus no soap. In front of the bathrooms there was a sign warning of the plague which is contagious from squirrels and chipmunks. So yeah it would be nice to have e some hand soap in the bathrooms.

This park doesn’t get talked about as much as it deserves! So underrated, highly recommend checking this place out if all the other South Lake Tahoe attractions are full. You’ve got a beautiful view of the lake plus it is located next to a majestic looking mansion with 2 tours per hour.

It is a beautiful place, quiet and plenty of place to park. One thing to suggest is to have more trash cans, because during the weekend lots of people gather by the lake and very limited trash cans available. The gift shop is very small but has tons of things to buy with reasonable prices. The tour to the mansion is great, tons of interesting information you gain and lots of things to see. Kelly was a docent who walked us through the whole mansion and explained everything. She was very knowledgeable and kind. Overall it is a nice place to spend a day and enjoy the weather and beautiful views.

This part of the Tahoe forest is phenomenal, not just for the majestic sugar pines! Trails wind through massive, diverse conifers in a huge chunk of Tahoe. Some of the cedars here are kinda even more impressive than the namesake sugar pines! Lots of young and old growth trees can be found here of almost all of the conifer species that grow in the Tahoe basin! Always love slowly wandering through this park looking up, mesmerized at all the spectacular specimens of Tahoe trees, each with their own story spanning sometimes centuries. For tree lovers, this park is good for the soul.
