Eldorado/Woods Lake
Overview
Woods Lake Campground offers a quintessential high-altitude experience within the Eldorado National Forest. Located at an elevation of approximately 8,200 feet, this destination provides a serene escape from the heat of the valley. Visitors are treated to stunning views of the surrounding Sierra Nevada peaks and direct access to crystal-clear alpine waters. The park is known for its peaceful atmosphere, making it a favorite for those who appreciate a more traditional, rustic camping experience surrounded by nature.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just off Highway 88 near the summit of Carson Pass, the campground sits on the edge of the Mokelumne Wilderness. The landscape is defined by dramatic granite formations and dense sub-alpine forests. It serves as a gateway to some of the most beautiful terrain in Northern California. The area is particularly famous for its vibrant wildflower displays during the mid-summer months, drawing nature lovers and photographers from across the state.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive forest service facility, Woods Lake focuses on the essentials rather than luxury. It is a dry camping location, meaning there are no hookups. Featured amenities include:
- Vault toilets maintained by the forest service.
- Seasonal potable water from piped spigots.
- Standard picnic tables and fire rings.
- Sturdy metal bear boxes for food storage.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many visitors is the extensive trail network surrounding the basin. For those staying at the park, there are several activities to enjoy:
- Hiking the Winnemucca Lake Trail for incredible alpine views.
- Fishing for trout in the clear waters of Woods Lake.
- Exploring the volcanic peaks of Round Top and the Mokelumne Wilderness.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers who prioritize trail access over resort-style amenities. Due to the narrow access road and smaller site footprints, it is best suited for tent campers, van lifers, or those with smaller travel trailers. If you are looking to disconnect from technology and immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the high Sierra, Woods Lake is a perfect match for your travel style.

We had such a wonderful stay! Our camp host, Hobie, was amazing—friendly, hilarious, and made us feel right at home. We were lucky to snag a spot on the last weekend the campground was open, and it couldn’t have been a better experience. Grizzly and Luna (our two pups) had the best time exploring, and we loved how quiet, clean, and family-friendly the site was. The bathrooms were honestly the cleanest I’ve ever seen at a campground! We highly recommend this spot and can’t wait to come back next year.

What a great campground, made even more enjoyable by the fantastic friendly informative host, Hobie 😍. Our group really enjoyed staying there for the very last weekend of the 2025 camping season. Hope Hobie is there when we come back again! Fingers crossed water becomes available for 2026.

Incredible campground, with great places, good sanitation, and very nice and fun hosts. Super close to some beautiful areas and on a walking distance to some natural pitholes and the Silver Lake. I came for bouldering specifically, and it's within ~30 minutes of driving from some of the best bouldering you can do around Lake Tahoe. Highly recommend staying here.
