RV Park

Overview

Overview

Elephant Rock Campground in Red River, New Mexico places travelers right into the dramatic mountain terrain of the Southern Rockies. This destination reflects the rugged, pine-studded landscape of Taos County, offering a classic high-elevation camping experience where morning mountain air and alpine views define the daily atmosphere. Visitors arriving here seek direct access to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the authentic charm of an old mining town turned outdoor playground.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, the property sits amid steep canyon walls, towering conifers, and rushing mountain streams. Reaching this area typically involves navigating winding two-lane state highways that climb well above eight thousand feet in elevation. Summer temperatures stay refreshingly mild, while autumn brings brilliant golden aspen foliage across the slopes, followed by heavy winter snows that transform the region into a snowy landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

Because specific on-site infrastructure details are not universally documented, travelers should contact management directly to verify utility configurations, water availability, and pull-through capabilities. Hookup types, maximum vehicle length restrictions, and site-level terrain vary widely across mountain campgrounds in this county. Asking ahead ensures that your specific rig dimensions and power requirements match what the property can accommodate upon arrival.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation dominates the surrounding area, with the Red River Ski & Summer Area operating right alongside the community for winter sports and summer lift-served mountain biking. Anglers can cast lines into the Red River or head toward nearby Eagle Nest Lake for cold-water fishing. Hiking trails climb steeply into the Latir Peak Wilderness and Wheeler Peak Wilderness, offering strenuous routes to alpine lakes and panoramic summit vistas.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location suits mountain-loving road-trippers, anglers, and hikers who prioritize scenic high-altitude surroundings over urban conveniences. Travelers towing smaller to mid-sized trailers or driving truck campers will find the winding approach roads and forested terrain a natural fit. Anyone aiming to escape desert heat or base themselves directly in the heart of northern New Mexico will appreciate the geographic setting.

Very disappointed. We drove in from Nogal, NM not really having a plan. We were excited to find this gorgeous campground late into the night. The views are amazing. Location is perfect in conjunction with town and supplies. The bathrooms are clean for being port a potties. Everything was perfect minus the hosts. Awful experience, we almost left and headed back for a hotel in Red River. The website said first come first serve, so we were shocked to arrive to reserved sites. Luckily, the people before us left early on the site we found. The host met us at our site and explained the campground rules then asked for payment. We needed to run back into red river to get more cash. We asked how long she was going to be up. The host did not give a time frame. She clearly stated, “I have a large fire going and it will be going for a while!” She also told us to unload some stuff before we go into town because people “like us” will come in the night and steal our spot if we don’t claim it. In other words, she is not going to save our spot for us. So we did. We unloaded and fed our two puppies. I went to the restroom and my boyfriend unloaded some stuff. We were just about to unclog our little ones from the line and a truck came aggressively pulling into our site. In the pitch black dark, door opens, and a man’s voice rumbles, “Do we have a problem here?” He gets louder and closer saying, “You don’t wanna pay me my money then get the hell outta here!” I was pretty startled, confused, and flat out appalled. Especially for a woman with PTSD. You shouldn’t roll up on people aggressively in the dark in the woods. I WILL NOT be staying here again. It turns out, his wife (the host) can’t get her stories straight. She painted us a very relaxed take your time picture, while simultaneously riling up her husband. Either way, personal problems or not, I’m shocked I even gave those people my money and stayed here. I would not have if it would have been earlier in the day and this was a more planned trip.

Very nice campground. Loved our campsite and the bathrooms were pretty clean. We also had some great mountain views from the campsite. The camp host was very nice and welcoming. The campground is dog friendly as long as it stays on a leash or cord. It was pretty quiet when we went. I totally recommend.

Here I found a meticulous campground that felt safe. Short hikes afford beautiful views with flat surfaces perfect for spiritual practice and connecting with nature. Sherri and her husband are gracious hosts!

Beautiful area. It is conveniently located just about 2.5 miles west of Red River. Many of the sites are first come-first served so get there early if you are going on a weekend. I just so happened to grab the last available site when I got there. It would get five stars, but I am more accustomed to more remote camping. You will here vehicle/road noise from passing vehicles on Highway 38.
