Emma Wood State Beach
Overview
Emma Wood State Beach offers a primitive, back-to-basics camping experience right on the Pacific edge. It is essentially a long, paved parking area where RVers can wake up to the sound of crashing waves and the smell of salt air. Unlike developed inland resorts, this park caters to those who enjoy dry camping and direct ocean access. It is a popular seasonal destination that emphasizes the raw beauty of the California coastline over luxury conveniences, providing a unique sense of place that few other coastal parks can match.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just north of the city of Ventura, the park sits on a narrow terrace between the Pacific Ocean and the Southern Pacific railroad tracks. This unique positioning provides uninterrupted ocean views and a dramatic backdrop for every sunset. However, campers should be aware that the environment includes the occasional rumble of passing trains and the hum of the nearby highway. The shoreline here is rocky and rugged, typical of the central coast, offering a front-row seat to migrating whales and soaring seabirds.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a strictly self-contained RV park, meaning your vehicle must have integrated holding tanks for potable water and waste. There are no hookups, showers, or dump stations available on-site. Park features include:
- Primitive campsites on a paved surface for easy leveling.
- Direct access to a rocky, cobble-strewn beach for shore fishing and beachcombing.
- Proximity to coastal trails for hiking and cycling.
While amenities are sparse, the primary feature is the location itself. Being able to park your RV just feet away from the surf is a rare luxury that defines the coastal boondocking experience at Emma Wood.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors often spend their days surfing and swimming at the beach or fishing for perch and bass directly from the shore. A short bike ride or drive south leads to the Ventura Promenade and the historic Ventura Pier, where you can find local dining and shopping. For those looking for a day trip, the Channel Islands National Park visitor center is located nearby in the Ventura Harbor. The area also features excellent coastal bike paths that connect Emma Wood to other local state beaches and the downtown district.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for boondocking enthusiasts who prioritize scenery and a prime location over full-service hookups. It appeals to travelers seeking a rugged coastal experience where they can disconnect and fall asleep to the rhythm of the tide. It is perfect for self-reliant RVers who enjoy sunset photography and a minimalist lifestyle. If you value oceanfront proximity and do not mind the lack of traditional park infrastructure, this site provides one of the most authentic beach stays in Southern California.

Nice place to park by the ocean and walk on the beach. There is a bike trail next to it also.

My favorite place in Ventura to take a walk on the beach minus all the crowds. Perfect for catching the sunset..

This place is an amazing place to camp when they open these camping spots under the bridge in about a year after restoration of the area according to public works

Easily accessed from Hwy 101 and, course, the PCH. Laid back spot, perfect for an impromptu stop or an all-day family outing. Whether you're a single person, a couple, a group of friends, or a whole family..... You won't be disappointed by the natural wonders of this large beach. I was there several days in a row (day use only) and never felt crowded. No services or hookups, just parking, the beach, the squirrels and seagulls, and of course the Pacific Ocean.

Stopped by here to support state parks and enjoy the west coast beach. I arrived near the end of the day and the friendly ranger let me know to use the parking app for an hourly pay option, rather than the entire day use fee, so that was quite nice. I enjoyed my time, stayed about 2 hours. It was a clean beach, not very populated, and I was able to hop up on some riprap and just enjoy the beach for a while.
