Fall River Lake - COE/Damsite

Overview

Fall River Lake - COE/Damsite offers a peaceful retreat managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the scenic plains of Kansas. Situated directly below the dam along the banks of the Fall River, this park provides a beautiful backdrop of limestone bluffs and rolling hills. It is a favored destination for those seeking a quiet natural escape away from the bustle of modern life, offering a classic outdoor experience that highlights the rugged beauty of the Chautauqua Hills. The park serves as a gateway to the larger lake area while maintaining a cozy, riverfront atmosphere.

Location & Surroundings

Located in southeastern Kansas, the park is nestled within a unique geological transition zone where the tallgrass prairie meets the Cross Timbers forest. The surrounding landscape features ancient sandstone outcroppings and lush riparian woodlands. Its position below the dam ensures a steady water flow, creating a vibrant environment where local wildlife thrives. RVers will appreciate the rolling terrain and the way the river carves through the limestone, providing a visually striking environment that feels far removed from the flat plains often associated with the region.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features well-proportioned sites designed to accommodate various RV lengths, with many offering electric and water hookups for a comfortable stay. The facilities are maintained to high federal standards, ensuring a clean and reliable environment for travelers. Key amenities include:

  • Access to a convenient dump station for easy sanitation.
  • Clean shower houses and flush toilets available for all guests.
  • Campsites featuring sturdy concrete pads, picnic tables, and fire rings.
  • A community playground for families traveling with children.

The park is known for its mature trees, providing significant shade during the warmer Kansas summer months.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of recreation, with excellent fishing opportunities for white bass, channel catfish, and crappie in both the river and the 2,450-acre reservoir nearby. Hikers can explore the Casner Creek Trail to see native flora or venture into the adjacent Fall River State Park for more extensive trekking. The lake itself is a hub for boating and kayaking, with multiple ramps available for easy water access. For those interested in history, the massive dam structure itself is an impressive feat of engineering worth observing from the park's various vantage points.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prioritize serenity and nature over high-end resort luxuries like pools or clubhouses. It appeals strongly to dedicated anglers, birdwatchers, and families looking for an affordable, water-centric camping trip. If you enjoy falling asleep to the rhythmic sound of flowing water and waking up to an unspoiled prairie sunrise, the Damsite area at Fall River Lake provides the perfect setting for your next Kansas RV adventure. It is particularly well-suited for budget-conscious RVers who appreciate the consistency and value of Corps of Engineers managed lands.

Beautiful campground with large sites and fhu. 21$per night. Full bathrooms and showers although not sure if any hot water. The bridge is out but there are signs and it was easy to access. There is only one other person here! The dam is running and it is a great view!

Nice, pretty and peaceful campground. I think there were only two other campers there the night we stayed. It’s a couple miles off the state road so no road noise. Centrally located bath house. We felt safe there and would def stay again. In the same area, there is also a state park with a campground.

Quiet well maintained campground. Be sure you enter from the correct side of the river. There is (was - it’s permanently closed now) a bridge connecting the two sections of the campground. But you need to enter from the side your campsite is on. We were in site 22, so the east side, and we entered down a gravel road that made me worry about the campground. But the actual campground was very nice. The camp host was friendly and came over to let us know there was some potential bad weather forecast and what to do if we heard the alarm from the dam go off. Turns out everything was fine but good to know in case of emergency. I got pretty much nothing with my Verizon cell service but picked up a decent connection with my T-Mobile internet box. With my America the Beautiful pass it was $10.50 for a FHU site. Can’t beat that!

This is a wonderfully quiet and peaceful small campground. However, you will have no Internet or phone service unless you go to the top of the dam - a great place for you and the kids to unplug.

A hidden gem! This ACE campground doesn’t disappoint! We parked here overnight and the site was so level we didn’t bother getting the leveling blocks out. The site was clean and had good power, water, and sewer hookups. The bathrooms were on par with other ACE campgrounds and work fine and clean. There was a ton of space between the sites. Nice picnic table, fire ring, grill, and prep table at the site. A great value at under $30 all in. I would stay here again! Please don’t try to cross the old bridge that connects the two sides of the campground especially if you are towing a camper. There is a low height and 3 tons (I think) weight restriction. Be sure to cross using the road that goes over the dam to get to the other side. Expect to drive on some gravel roads. They were not a problem at all.
