Figueroa Campground
Overview
Figueroa Campground offers a quintessential high-altitude escape within the Los Padres National Forest. Situated atop Figueroa Mountain, this site provides a rustic, back-to-basics camping experience that appeals to those looking to disconnect from city life. It is not a resort park, but rather a quiet, serene location surrounded by lush oaks and pines, perfect for travelers seeking tranquility and a genuine connection to nature during their mountain excursion.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, California, this campground is perched at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet. The winding drive up to the mountain provides panoramic views of the Santa Ynez Valley and surrounding peaks. The higher elevation ensures cooler temperatures during the summer months compared to the valley floor, making it a refreshing retreat for visitors who appreciate diverse mountainous landscapes and dense forest canopy.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is designed for traditional camping, meaning travelers should be prepared for a minimalist setup. You will find primitive, non-electric sites suitable for tent camping and smaller RVs, given the narrow and winding access roads. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. While there are no utility hookups, the park features vault toilets and potable water, ensuring basic needs are met for those enjoying the remote wilderness.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them occupied, particularly through extensive hiking and mountain biking trails that crisscross the Los Padres National Forest. In the spring, the area is world-renowned for its stunning wildflower displays that carpet the slopes. Those looking for a day trip can descend into the valley to explore the charming town of Los Olivos, famous for its boutique wineries, or visit the historic Old Mission Santa Ines.
Who This Park Is Best For
Figueroa Campground is ideal for self-contained travelers who enjoy off-grid adventure and don’t mind narrow, steep mountain roads. It is not designed for massive big rigs or luxury RVs requiring full hookups. Instead, it serves as a fantastic home base for photographers, nature lovers, and hikers who prioritize a scenic, quiet atmosphere over modern campground conveniences and resort-style amenities found in the nearby valley towns.

update July 2025 camp ground closed due to last years fire. Cool camp ground in the Oaks, several trails nearby for hiking and Biking. Mainly a tent camp ground although small trailer will fit in some sites and the road to get there is steep!

This campground was so extremely huge! Every where was nicely cleaned up, the bathrooms were pretty clean as good as they can be for being outside!

Super friendly campground host, great pit toilets, our first time camping with no tap water, not a problem. The campground was nicely busy but not overcrowded on weekend. It was eerily quiet in weekdays, spooked us a little the first night. High elevation, so the weather varies depending on whether you're in the cloud or not. Great individual sites. 30 minutes drive to nearest town.

Beautiful campground with oak and manzanita everywhere. Large sites spaced mostly far apart, with well maintained camp tables and fire pits. You can often get firewood from the camp host. There is absolutely no water at the site, so make sure to bring plenty. We had zero bugs, but apparently there can be biting flies in hot weather. Highly recommended.

We typically choose dispersed camping but it’s difficult to find nice spots close to LA, especially for tents. This campsite allows you to feel safe around other campers without compromising those wilderness vibes. The views en route are stunning! Just be prepared for the drive up the narrow mountain road (you can park where you camp). We arrived at 2am and were able to set up in a big space with a grill rack and fire ring then pay the $32 nightly fee when the host did their rounds the following day. Downside is there are A LOT of flies so we didn’t hang around as long as we might’ve done otherwise.
