Fond du Lac Campground and Boat Landing

Overview

The Fond du Lac Campground and Boat Landing offers a peaceful retreat located on the western edge of Duluth, Minnesota. Managed by the city’s Parks and Recreation department, this facility provides a rustic and natural setting along the scenic St. Louis River. It serves as a quieter alternative to the busier urban campgrounds, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the North Shore’s wilderness while remaining within city limits. The park is characterized by its wooded campsites and direct access to the water, making it a favorite for those who value tranquility and outdoor recreation.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the historic Fond du Lac neighborhood, the campground sits at the base of the St. Louis River, where the water is calm and surrounded by lush forests. The area is defined by its proximity to the St. Louis River Estuary, providing a unique freshwater ecosystem to explore. Because it is located away from the main tourist hubs of Canal Park, visitors enjoy a secluded atmosphere dominated by the sounds of the river and local wildlife. It is conveniently positioned near Highway 23, providing easy access to both the city and the vast wilderness to the south and west.

Amenities & Park Features

This facility caters to various camping styles, offering 55 sites that range from primitive spots to those with electric and water hookups. The campground is well-equipped for water enthusiasts, featuring a public boat launch and a fishing pier that provides excellent access to the river. On-site facilities include a bathhouse with showers, vault toilets, and a playground for families. Many sites are nestled under a thick canopy of trees, offering shaded privacy that many RVers appreciate during the warmer summer months.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away, with the entrance to Jay Cooke State Park located just a short drive from the campground. This state park is famous for its swinging bridge and rugged hiking trails along the St. Louis River. For those who prefer being on the water, the river is a prime spot for paddling and walleye fishing. Additionally, the nearby Chambers Grove Park offers beautiful picnic spots and historical markers. If you crave city amenities, the shops, restaurants, and maritime attractions of downtown Duluth are only about 20 minutes away.

Who This Park Is Best For

Fond du Lac Campground is ideal for travelers who prefer a slower pace of life and easy access to the water. It is a perfect fit for kayakers and anglers who want to launch their boats directly from their home base. Families looking for a traditional camping experience without the crowds of major resorts will find the atmosphere welcoming. While it offers hookups, it is best suited for those who appreciate a more back-to-nature vibe and the ability to explore the rugged beauty of Northern Minnesota’s river valleys.

My husband & I stay here quite often. The campground is intimate, small, cozy…whatever you want to call it, we love it! The water view never disappoints. There’s a bar/restaurant across the river, The Wabegon. Friday night fish fry is awesome! Chambers Grove is a 5 minute walk under the bridge with a nice park for kids. You are 25 minutes from all of the amenities of Canal Park.

How do I put this… Absolutely great camp sites and location next to the river as well. Great balance between having nice amenities and also allowing for plenty of green/natural space. Would recommend to anybody looking for an approachable camp site for their trips. Everything you might need is right there.

Nice quiet campground 25min from Duluth. Very nice shower house. Well kept all around. Nice staff. Extra little touches like bag games, canoe rentals, game room with home made pinball. Water front sites. Very happy with our stay. 7/5-7/11/2025.

My wife, daughter and myself had a blast!!! The camp attendant (I forgot her name) was very very nice and always made sure everything was going good and that our needs were met. We did two tents and a big screen tent. Our original spot was to small and they had no problems with us switching to a bigger site. The fishing was actually pretty decent from the shore. Caught smallmouths, channel catfish, crappies, and rock bass. The views are pretty! Specially looking down through the canyon of the lower St Louis River area. The camp ground itself is pretty and very well kept. Only issue was some loud teenagers at the park across the street until early hrs of the morning. We will definitely be going back very soon. Thank you for having us!

Loved staying in the little cabin. There's only one outlet, but they do have a power strip in there as well as a fan and heater. Flush toliets and showers were very clean. Even the vault toliets were very clean, which isn't usually the case other places I've been. Our toddler loved that we were close to water, that there's a sandbox, and there's a great park across the street.
