We had a great two-night camping trip with our kids at Fremont Peak State Park. The location offers incredible views, especially from the peak itself—the short climb is absolutely worth it for the panorama! A huge highlight was visiting the observatory just a few minutes away. We loved the lecture on local plants and stars, and getting to see Saturn through the telescope was unforgettable. (Just be sure to read their instructions about minimizing light after dark!) Overall, a fantastic experience

I used to live pretty close to Fremonts Peak on the Salinas side and used to go up a lot just to go to the peak. I even got a 80$ ticket for going up at night after they closed to see above the fog and Salinas at night lol. I would do it again lol

Needed a camp while traveling to the redwoods and found this park. Surprisingly busy place with most campsites being full during our stay in June 2025. The sites were fairly well spread out and there was potable water and put toilets available. The temperature was significantly cooler than down in the valley. The road up is long, narrow, and windy. I would NOT recommend any large RVs or trailers attempting.

Spectacular views and easy hiking. Campgrounds perched perfectly for a nice day of nature and peace. Peak is super fun to walk and climb up to and there are a few small caves as well to explore.

I'll admit that the weather was not on our side during our stay (It was unusually hot!), but the park has apparently been under-funded for a very long time. Most of the picnic tables are dirty and dilapidated. The invasive weeds (Italian thistle that will take your skin off) is everywhere. There are great views from the park stretching from Moss Landing to Gilroy; but a campground that close to that many people should not rely on pit toilets. The stench of the toilets was awful and, of course, attracted flies that made life pretty miserable. We were with a scouting group and asked in advance if there was a service project we could do for the park. The answer came back no. Really? Just scrubbing clean some tables would be an improvement. The youth enjoyed the Observatory that is open a few times a year because the evening weather was perfect and insect free, and they loved the telescope viewing of the sky, but tent camping at Fremont Peak is not something I would ever recommend.

Great Park. There a bit of overgrowth, depending on what time of year you camp, so bring Permithren and wear long sleeves and pants with boots. The views are amazing! Plenty of excellent subjects for macro photography too!

Very neglected State Park. Overgrown weeds everywhere in lower campground. Nasty pit toilets, I have seen much better. Great views. Road is long, windy and narrow towards the top. Signage is not very clear at bottom of hill. Google maps was a little confused as to which of the 3 directions to take. One night stay was enough. Would not return.

We loved hiking here. Amazing views all the way to the ocean. Great history plaques and cool looking rocks and vegetation. We practically had the place to ourselves. Wonderful nature experience.
