Overview
Situated deep within the Fremont-Winema National Forest, Fourmile Lake Campground offers a quintessential high-mountain camping experience. Resting at an elevation of 5,700 feet, this park provides a serene backdrop at the foot of the majestic Mount McLoughlin, where the air is crisp and the views are expansive. It serves as a rustic gateway for travelers looking to disconnect from digital life and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Southern Oregon's volcanic landscape and pristine forests.
Location & Surroundings
The park is located approximately 40 miles northwest of Klamath Falls, nestled on the southern shore of Fourmile Lake. The surrounding terrain is characterized by dense stands of lodgepole pine and mountain hemlock that provide ample shade and a sense of privacy. Its proximity to the Sky Lakes Wilderness makes it a prime basecamp for those wishing to explore protected backcountry trails and alpine basins while staying near the cold, clear lake waters.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive camping area primarily suited for self-contained RVs. The park offers essential facilities to support your stay in the wilderness:
- Vault toilets located conveniently throughout the campground loops.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Recreation is centered around the water and the extensive trail systems. Anglers frequently visit to catch rainbow and brook trout, while the 10-mph speed limit ensures a peaceful environment for kayaking and canoeing. Hikers often tackle the challenging Mount McLoughlin Trail, which climbs through rugged lava flows to offer panoramic views. The nearby Pacific Crest Trail and Twin Ponds Trail also provide endless opportunities for deep forest exploration and wildlife photography.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for boondocking enthusiasts and those who prefer a quiet, off-grid experience over a traditional resort. It is a favorite for equestrian travelers and hikers due to its specialized facilities and direct wilderness access. If you enjoy waking up to mountain reflections on still water and do not mind the lack of modern utilities like Wi-Fi or electricity, this rugged destination provides the perfect escape for your next adventure.

Didn’t camp, just went to the day use area for a picnic lunch and a nice hike after. Didn’t see any people other than another truck we passed on the way in. Very quiet and peaceful. Saw minimal wildlife but did see a bald eagle hovering above the lake and it dove down to snag a fish. Beautiful lake and lots of picnic tables.

I've been coming here for 35 years. Every year it just gets worse! Now the private concessionaire that runs it has adopted almost a militaristic, law enforcement, authoritarian approach. Today I just wanted to have a look around and see if it was worth trying to put a boat in next weekend and maybe camp. I was in my little truck and just wanted to drive through the campground. A nasty old lady in a bright green RV, apparently the campground host, followed me through the entire campground harassing me! These private concessioners (Lake of the Woods R esort) are ruining our public lands!

Excellent horseback riding. There are plenty of side with stalls for the horse. Plenty of room for trailers as well. The views and riding are stunning!

Once you get over the 6 miles of washboard road at 5 mph, the lake and surrounding area make the drive worth it! Our camp site was right near the water, with a perfect view of the lake and surrounding mountains. The camp hosts are wonderful people and very knowledgeable about the area.

I was originally bringing my dogs with me to hike on the trail, but then we saw the day use area. The lake is gorgeous! We went into the water and played for a while. The lake seemed fairly shallow for a pretty decent distance. Unsure when/where it gets deep at. I turned to look at the campground, and we saw the beautiful mountain peak of Mount McLaughlin. It was completely unexpected as I did not realize you could see the mountain from there. We will definitely be back.
